Newry Newspapers 1872
« on: Sunday 21 January 07 02:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have an ancestor Thomas Gordon who was killed in an accident in New Zealand on 10 February 187. He had emigrated  from Northern Ireland to Australia with his brother William in the 1830's. His parents were Thomas Gordon and Jane Martin and his father was a farmer.

We have fund it difficult to trace him. When he died, his death notice in New Zealand says Newry papers please copy. What I want to know is: Are these papers still available, how easy are they to access and are they likely to give us any further info.

Regards

Hi Carawa,

I am another descendant of Thomas Gordon from Newry.  I, along with many others, am also stuck on getting information about his life in Ireland.  I would like to share information with you.

Heather.

Hiya Carawa,

The Newspaper Library at the Central Library, Royal Avenue, Belfast holds the following Newry papers ...

The Commercial Telegraph which later became the Telegraph 1870s to 1960
Examiner on microfilm 1870s to 1887 and then on and off (ie not a complete run) to 1950
Reporter 1870s and still going
Standard 1870s and still going

I'll post the holdings of the Armagh Irish and Local Studies Library and the Newry Library later.

Chris

There are several Gordon manuscript family trees in the Blackwood Family history manuscripts in the LinenHall library, Belfast.  The volume references are as follows
Vol 5p97 Highlands, Vol 10p49 Saintfield, Vol 16p96 Glasgar, Vol 27T Saintfield, Vol 33 Drumaness, Vol 35T Highlands, Vol 42 Campbell, Vol 43 Centrefold, Vol 60 by P Crossle, volume  Vol 87 County Down by P Crossle.
Gordon (an unnumbered?) MS in book section.
I think that author Crossle had Newry connections, so volumes 60 and 87 would be where I start from.
I suggest you ask them for photocopying estimates if both you and they think your knowledge relevant and be prepared to pay the extra for post and packing. However if the material is really relevant when you get it, I suggest a further donation to this unique library that is always needing extra funds. Linen Hall Library,17 Donegall Square North, Belfast BT15GB, Northern Ireland, Telephone: +44 (0)28 9032 1707,  Fax: +44 (0)28 9043 8586, Email: info[AT]linenhall.com.

On the internet are
bbs.mayo-ireland.ie/webx?.ee6b2c2
bbs.mayo-ireland.ie/WebX?50@7.bHwObDwBwxN.0@.3b9dead3
in particular by Robert Gordon Wilson his yahoo email is recorded there
“James Gordon II was born in 1693 in Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland. He resided at Sheepbridge House in Sheepbridge, Newry, Down Co., Ireland about 1710.”
I think a check on Landed Gentry of Ireland would not go amiss.
Ros Davies’s Co Down website is helpful on Sheepbridge and Gordon
Good Luck, Jim

See http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp to bring in the connections to Thomas. eg
Thomas GORDON (AFN: 2T8W-Q4)  Pedigree
  Birth:   1792

  Of Newry, Down, Ireland
 Death:   D. YOUNG
Parents:
Father:  William GORDON (AFN: 2T8W-GQ)  Family
