Gosling, Gloucestershire

Would be interested to hear from anyone who is researching the Gosling family Gloucestershire particularly around the Fairford/Kempsford/Whelford area.  Trying the add some depth to a Hannah Gosling

Hello!

I'm newly onto GOSLING in the Churcham, Gloucestershire, area. I have a Katherine who marries Thomas HOPKINS there in 1568.

My main interest is determining the correct wife of Thomas HOPKINS, father of Alice HOPKINS who married John GILBERT in 1606 Bridgwater, Somersetshire.

I'd very much appreciate ANY info on Gloucestershire GOSLINGs.

Does this line have any connection to Shirehampton/Bristol.
I have a William Gilbert born circa 1757.

I've really no idea! I've not taken the line to that era, except in the USA.

John GILBERT (1577 Eng - 1657 USA) was the son of Giles/Gyles GILBERT and Joan PEARCE.

Giles is said to be the son of Robert GILBERT (d. 1546 Bridgwater, Soms., England) and Jane HAYDON (b. 1478 England). I've yet to research them.

Alice HOPKINS, second wife of John GILBERT, is to be the dau of Thomas. Literature has him of Bristol but I've yet to find good info.

Several HOPKINS in the area of Churcham and Wotton-under-Edge (where I find an Alice born to Thomas with a date most trees list), seem to have to do with weaving, haberdashery, and the like.

If it would help you, the other male child of Giles and Joan was Giles (1573). I haven't followed him further.

Giles is the only child I have in my tree for Robert and Jane (Haydon) GILBERT.

John GILBERT, with third wife Winifred (Rossiter) COMBE, had sons Gyles and Joseph. 

There is a lot of information on the GILBERT family online.

NEHGR 4:339 on has a lot on the family but concentrates on John, sons, and later generations here in the USA. It might be helpful, though. There is also a genealogy in both Old and New England at:

So sorry, Jack, that I'm not much help. My England information is too early to likely be of use to you.

If you read my post (https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=209909.msg6323991#msg6323991), I'm leaning toward a marriage of Katherine GOSLING to Thomas HOPKINS in time for daughter (of Thomas) Alice in 1582 Wotton-under-Edge.

Am wondering if you have that Katherine or any information on the GOSLING family of the time and area.

As Gosling is not one of my central branches I have not endeavoured to go back to the 16th century .. I may  one day follow this line but unfortunately not as yet .. I only go back into 19th century ... to Hannah which you don’t have in your tree so I doubt there is a clear connection immediately.  It iseems a fairly common surname it seems in Glos so there maybe a very tenuous link.
