Many thanks, but other info I have suggests his father is also William, from Lampeter, and that he had a sister Margaret born 1860/61 in Aberdare.
Is it possible to search using place of Birth rather than place of census?

The 1841 census does not give place of birth - it only indicates whether or not the person was born in the county.  So I searched in Llangynog as it is fairly likely that a person born 1837 would still be in the place of birth (but not guaranteed of course!).

Let me see if I can see anything in 1851/61.

Well, not much luck.  I think you will need more info.  What is your source for his father's name and the birth of his sister? It seems a very large gap between his birth in 1837-ish and hers in 1860/1.

There are 2 William Davies born in Llangunnock in 1851 - 1 age 12, only son of widow Mary; and the son of Benjamin and Anne who I found on the 1841.

There are about 15 Margaret Davies born in Aberdare 1859-61 in the 1861 census, several with father William, but none that look old enough to also be the father of 1838 William.

I notice on the 1881 that he is single - I was looking for a wife's name to search as well, but I see that is not going to help.  :(

Hmmm.
This goes back to my G Grandmother Maria Davies.
Her marriage cert 1886 shows her living in Eckington Derbysire, and her father as William Davies, coal miner.
The 1881 census shows the family in Stavely Derbyshire:
Maria Davies age 16 b. Aberdare
William Davis age 45 b. Slanganob (sic) Miner
Also several brothers & sisters who my father remembers by their names as Great Aunts
My father says Maria had a cousin called Henry Davicott who lived in same village.
I found a Howell Henry Derricott, son of Joel Darricott and Margaret Davies  in One World Tree s on Ancestry .com
The 1901 census shows them in Staveley, although the middle name Henry is absent.
I've been in contact with  a descendent of Joel who states that Margaret's father was William Davies born  in Lampeter.
Sorry its so complicated!
Hope you can give me some more pointers.
