Ferguson's from Islay
« on: Saturday 27 January 07 12:50 GMT (UK) »
Hello

My 4xGreat Grandparents Donald Ferguson and Catherine McIntyre married on 8 Dec 1835.
They went on to have 9 children that i am aware of.

The problem i am having just now is finding a record of Donald Ferguson's Birth/Baptism.

Donald Ferguson died 30 July 1858, 46 years, cause Inflammation (12 weeks)
Father - John Ferguson
mother - Jean Kilpatrick
Informant - Catherine Ferguson, Wife.

According to this information Donald was born 1811/12.

A search on the IGI gives one child for John Ferguson and Jene Kilpatrick
 - Ephric Ferguson (female)  chnd. 22 Feb 1810, Killarrow, Argyll

However, Ted Larson's wonderful site gives 2 children
 - Ferguson,John,Kilpatrick,Jene,Kilinaline,Ephric,22,Feb,1810
 - Ferguson,John,Kilpatrick,Jene,Kilinaline,Finlay,14,Mar,1815

BUT there is directly below these 2 children the following
- Ferguson,John,Paterson,Jene,Kilinaline,Donald,31,May,1808
- Ferguson,John,Paterson,Jene,Kilinaline,Flora,23,Apr,1812

Firstly, Is Kilinaline the name of a Farm ?

Secondly, taking into account the first names, place names and dates could these 2 Jene's be the same person ?

I would be very grateful for any assistance at all.
Debbie

I have traced my Ferguson ancestors back to Alexander Ferguson and his wife Mary McDiarmod.  Like your John Ferguson Alexander is from Kilinaline.  I wondered if these men might be brothers but have been unable to make any connection.  However, in my research on the Scotlands People  web site I found a John Ferguson married to a Jene Paterson who had a son Donald and a daughter Flora.

Also I found a Donald Ferguson and Catherine MacIntyre who had a son, Alexander, born 01/04/1849.

Could any of these be people you are looking for?  Your posting was made quite some time ago and you may have found more evidence than was listed in 2007.

I'd be delighted to discuss this further if you are interested.

Hmmm....There can be few people better qualified to write of the recent history of ferries on the west coast of Scotland than Sandy Ferguson. Ferguson was born in Greenock but spent much of his childhood at Carradale, where he decided that he wanted to spend his life at sea.

Does anyone have information on Archibald Ferguson and wife Mary White or Whyte ?  They both had passed before 1861 according to daughter's Mary wedding information to Duncan McCalman.

I've found birth of a couple of their children

Duncan born 12/12/1799 at Bowmore

then another

Duncan born  7/2/1801 at Bowmore

believe one of these Duncan's marries Mary Jane Adair from Bowmore who was born in 1801 on Nov 21 1822 in Paisley Low, Renfrewshire , Scotland. Return to Islay where the first 5 children are born ( Alexander, Archibald, John, Ann, Neil) and then in 1841 census reappear in Paisley, Renfrewshire living at 10 Lawn Street. Eventually coming to Canada living in Oro, Simcoe county, Ontario. immigrating between 1848 - 1851. Appear on 1861 census in Canada

Mary Ferguson (b) 1820 daughter of Archibald Ferguson and Mary White marries Duncan McCalman (b) 1825 widower on July 11 1861 in Kilchoman, Argyll.

Wondering if anyone might have more information or some connection on this Ferguson family.

Also if anyone is a direct Ferguson descendant have you or relative taken a DNA test. I have completed an 111 DNA marker test.

Thank you

Hi,

A long time after the original request for the location of Killinallan.

Yes it is/was a farm located at the NE(seaward) end of Loch Gruinart on Islay.

It is shown in the centre of this 25" OS Sheet from 1878 [Sheet CLXXXVI.14 Kilchoman] (http://maps.nls.uk/view/74481088).
