Procession at Coronation of King Edward VII
« on: Tuesday 30 January 07 20:05 GMT (UK) »
Hello all!

I have been told that my Great Grandfather, John Lewis, was coachman to the Marquis of Salisbury during the procession at the coronation of King Edward VII.

Now, I know you all love a challenge? Does anyone know if there would have been any records for this, or if there is any way of finding out? Aparently there was a photo somewhere in the family at some point, but noone knows where.

Any help or advise would be greatfully received!

Do you know if he was employed by the Marquis of Salisbury or indeed where your Great Grandfather lived? Hatfield House in Hertfordshire is the seat of the Marquis of Salisbury so I was wondering if he was local to there!

Yes, aparently he was employed by the Marquis as his coachman. He met my great grandmother when he was working, during a trip to Chievely in Berkshire.

I have emailed Hatfield House and asked if there would be any records of their employees.

I'm not sure if they will be very helpful though, as aparently my great grandfather got the Marquis wife pregnant, and so my great grandmother brought up his 'love child'. If it was true, no doubt our name will be mud!

This is getting much more interesting than just finding labourers on census's which is where i was up to recently!

Bring on the scandal!!!

Georgina Caroline the wife of Robert Arthur Talbot Gascoyne-Cecil 3rd Marquess of Salisbury,(1830-1903), Prime Minister, died in 1899 aged 72. So if this was the one he got pregnant it would be a long time before the coronation of Edward VII in 1902. :)

Hi Stan,

Hee hee!!

There goes the likelihood of that then!

I can't say i'm not disappointed, I really liked that story! Don't suppose it could have been the next Marquess of Salisburys wife could it? The child in question was born in 1901 and was supposedly born by 'Lady Salisbury'.

Suppose not.

The story goes on to say that the 'Salisburys' then gave my family a coaling business to help support the child.

Oh well, back to labourers and Kitchen Maids then!

Maybe the lady salisbury in question was Lady Cicely Gore? She had time to have the 'love child' before she had her last child with her husband in 1902?

I am stabbing in the dark I know, but I really love this story, and would love for it to be true!
