Hi Alf,

Not having any luck with a marriage. Did they stay in Wiltshire for a while or emigrate straight away. The only William Barrett I can see in the 1841 census is in Preshute (Marlborough Reg District) He has a daughter Eliza aged  5, also Daughter Maria aged 1. He is listed as Farmer aged 25. Problem is wife is Emma aged 25 and all born Wiltshire  ???
HO107/1185/11 Folio 7 Page 7 (Margaret Preshute) in case of interest

1851 Census

HO107/1838 Folio 176 Page 20
Crown Court
Marlborough St Mary

BASSETT James Head 78 Mar b Marlboro Tanner Lab
BASSETT Ann Wife 68 Mar b Marlborough
STANLEY Ann Grandaughter 7 b Ewall Middlesex Pauper
WYATT Charlotte Vistor 73 Widow b Chesterton Wilt Pauper
TAYLOR William Visitor 34 Unm b Ramsbury Wilt Tann Lab
BAILEY James Visitor 15 Unm b Ramsbury Wilts Tanner Lab

Don't expect these ages are too accurate and looks like young Ann is Mary's daughter whether name is Stonely or Stanley

Looks like the Baptism for James

BASSETT James 21 May 1785 Marlborough St Mary....Father William

Hope it helps

I think the Bassett marriage to Phillips. Cook is my great grandparents
I was unaware of a previous marriage
Wife Elizabeth died of Typhus in Bermondsey 1855 along with Son William one week apart.
Father William daughters Emily Sarah and Elizabeth appear in Adelaide circa 1862
William died 1864 interred in West Terrace Cemetery.
Cause of Death consumption.
Emily Sarah married Charles Herbert Tabor in Adelaide 1866
Elizabeth married William Barber Kingston South East circa 1870
William was a journeyman Tanner whilst in Bermondsey
Whereabouts of other children unknown to me.
Thank you once again Kris

Hi Alf,

So it is the second marriage you are interested in particularly. I just found a few GRO refs. I see Elizabeth lists as PHILLIPPS in the GRO reference, curious why the submitted IGI entries says PHILLIPS or COOK (I wondered if she may have been previously married) Certificate may be interesting. I haven't had any luck finding them in 1861 Census. There is a possible for Emily in Bermondsey (Servant) but that was the only possible member of the family I could spot.

I see Emma died Dec 1/4 1842 Marlbro 8 239

William BASSETT = Elizabeth PHILLIPPS Sep 1/4 1843 Marlbro 8 548

Maria Sarah BASSETT was born Sep 1/4 1839 Marlbro 8 329 - This would give you Emma's Name..........Kris  :)

Hi again Kris
When i first encountered th marriage in Purton of William and Elizabeth Her name was listed as Phillips only.
When I next looked some years later the Cook name appeared.
The Phillips woman was listed as being born in Germany
Family legend or rumour suggested that My great great grandmother was Prussian with some linkage to Count Bismark the German Chancellor.
But you know the worth of such Legend[Rumour)
Thanks again
