New South Wales Look Up
« on: Sunday 21 November 04 23:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi Geoff
Saw your offer.
I have a past relative John Morris who was born in Bridlington Yorks on August 16th 1806 to John Morris & Elizabeth Holtby.  According to a family Bible John (junior) died in Parramanta, New South Wales in 1850.  I don't know if he married but I wondered if you could supply any further death detail.  Do you know if there was any event which may have caused his death other than natural causes?

John Morris was a surgeon & his son John Morris was born in 1806

so the marriage could be correct but I'm surprised hr couldn't sign

bearing in mind his father's job.

My John Morris (senior) married Elizabeth Holtby, father William.  Any

connection?  Do you know where William was born or baptised?

Nice to hear from you

Hi gillbill
looking at this old post . Are you still interested in John Morris info? Have only just found this chat site, but I am descended from John Morris, captain of steam packets on the Parramatta River in Sydney Australia whom you mentioned in your post (actually he died 3rd January 1851). I have lots of extra info. Would love a scan of the Bible pages you mentioned.

Hi austaust and gillbill,

From NSW BDM http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/Pages/family-history/

Deaths
1850 John MORRIS age 45 11/1850 V185011 36A
1851 John MORRIS age 44 640/1851 V1851640 37B
and also
1851 John MORRIS age 49 310/1851 V1851310 37B

So possibly two different men that you are discussing.

Family notices for Captain John MORRIS who died jan 1851 in Parramatta
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article12923892 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article60031998 and
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article59771864

From NSW state archives, you can use the keyname search http://indexes.records.nsw.gov.au/keyname.aspx
to see that there are a number of convicts called John MORRIS and some who arrived on government ships etc.  I can't see a probate or deceased estate for the 1850 or 1851 death.

regards,
   Ros
