I have an ancestor who arrived with his family on the John Rennie arriving in Queensland on the 16th Feb 1873.
His name is John Thomas Huet who arrived with his wife Catherine. They had a daughter who was born on the voyage and named Christine Rennie Huet.
Hope to hear about any information available.

Hi Rosie,

I recognise the names - yes I have the diary of the voyage and the birth of Christina Huet is recorded and her name is mentioned.  I will write to you via personal message and give you my email address.

Best wishes

Hi Diana,

Do you by chance know if Stephen Perkes (sometimes spelled Perks) was aboard the John Rennie? I'm trying to find out if he was in fact on that ship and also if he traveled alone. Any information or history you could provide would be SO appreciated! Thank you in advance for any info or interesting details.

Hi Diana,
I was searching for a possible image of the 'John Rennie' and found your message. My GGrandmother, Elizabeth Hurley, was on that voyage and disembarked in Port Denison (Bowen) on 16 February 1873. She was aged 17 years. I would very much appreciate a copy of your ancestor's diary if you are willing to share.

Many thanks
June

Hi Diana,

The sister and family of my husband's great grandfather sailed on the John Rennie in 1872/73 ... we would love to read about the journey if you're still happy to send a copy.

They were Elizabeth and Henry Packman and their four children. Do you have full passenger details - we are wondering if her brother went with them. Will pm you.

Many thanks.

Deirdre

Thanks Giblet, that's amazing. Found the family but nothing for hubby's great g'father.

Would still love to see the diary though; it must have been quite a journey.

If you have any more interest in the ship specifically, the John Rennie was one of the ships of the Devitt and Moore line which specialised in the Australian trade and remained with sailing ships much longer than most. The archive is at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and there is, if you can find a copy, a history of the line called Painted Ports by Capt A.G. Course. There is a photo of the ship at the NMM.

Another ship of the line is the City of Adelaide - and there is a hugely exciting project to rescue her and bring her to Adelaide. She is the only remaining clipper designed for the Australian trade, and she and Cutty Sark are the only remaining clippers. See http://cityofadelaide.org.au/
