birth record Macnay (Wallsend)
« on: Wednesday 07 February 07 08:34 GMT (UK) »
my ancestor was born in Wallsend, NBL in 1785. His name was Thomas Macnay> I believe he also married there. His wifes name was Mace (dont know whether this was her 1st
or surname. I know of only one son born 1827 also wallsend, named Matthew Macnay. Thomas and Matthew were both coal miners. This is all I know about them & so would appreciate any information.

Hi Koru

Welcome to Rootschat!

This seems to be the family in 1851 - I think the Mace name might be a misunderstanding of the wife's name!

Just to add a wee bit, brought on by spotting Janis's mention of Wesleyan church.

Up to July 1837 the only LEGAL way to marry in England, was in a church of the "established church of the land"
( =  a "Parish" Church, = The Church of England)

Quakers and Jewish people were exempted from this legislation.

So the choice for Wesleyans, Presbyterians, Catholics etc, was to...

* marry in the "wrong" church,
** just not marry,
*** marry beyond te reach of English law.. e.g Scotland

Michael Dixon
(RC who crossed from Northumberland to Scotland to marry... but not for legal reasons..and after 1837 !  LOL )
Names.

GALLAGHER ( + variations).

Lowell, Ma, USA
