Thanks again Heather.
You have helped me so often. I wrote a message to reply to you last night and lost it. We have been having internet problems.
I had found the 1865 death on Free BMD and thought it may be her so this extra information is good. Yes the John would be too young if the age there is correct as married 1817. I'd say the Frances is correct and when I first read the question about Edwin I thought you were referring to her brother-too late at night and I'd been looking for him so it was good you were alert and realized she had a son who wasn't with her in 1861. Isn't that a boost for any of his descendants as its usually impossible to find father for illegitimate children?
Thanks for all this help. I'm trying to find some connection to the military with Elijah, Edwin, William etc as I have a letter written after WW1 by the father of 3 boys killed and the letter stated that they were 5th generation of Shaw to serve the British Empire ranging from General to Private and some of their great uncles had served with General Gordon at Khartoum (which was c 1880) and some were in the Navy. Their greatuncles on Shaw side should be this family so let me know if you come across any with occupation connected to military. Otherwise I just work my way through the census records and find who's missing in 1881. I thought if there was a General in there he should be easy to find but I've been looking for military Shaw's for a long time. Of course it could all be incorrect and the ones who fought in the wars may be on another branch as the man who wrote the story was born in Australia (my greatgrandmother's brother) and I have found stories handed down have got confused in many cases when younger family members didn't know their relatives back in England. I need this information to verify that I am on the right family now as my Shaw ancestor who arrived here was Tom born c 1820 at Loscoe (1851 census in Nottingham with corrrect family) but his parents according to death cert were Edward and Ellen. I've spent years looking for them with no luck. Then I found Tom correct age born Loscoe with parents John and Ann Draper. Draper was shown as maiden surname of Tom's wife who was Betsy Richards on her death cert and I knew that was incorrect so I"m assuming now that son-in-law who recorded the details probably was told a grandmother was Draper but got the wrong one. The only other information I have to go on is this letter about the military ancestors so hoping I'll find something there to verify parents being John and Anne.
I'm now on a more desperate hunt as there is a centenary celebration at my old school later this year and 2 of the Shaw boys who were killed in WW1 were first day pupils when the school opened and I've been asked to write up a family history to display at the event.
Regards
