Hi there : my Hazell relatives were originally (18thC) pilots in the Bristol region (Pill) but seem to have moved to South Wales ,by 1880, after pilot licences were relaxed ending the monopoly of the Port of Bristol.I found lots of information about mariners from a Pill local history page and by searching for "South Wales" "Master mariners" in a Google search.

I still hope to trace my mother,Honor,'s Uncles and Aunts (Stuart Street Cardiff) - they all seem elusive except for a happy "reunion" with her first cousin (86) in the US (on-line)just a year before she herself died aged 89 ,a month ago.Honor Hazell was born in Barry.

david rees was most likely my great grandfather's brother who was born in Wick but ended up in Barry where his sons went to sea & one,Tom, became a dock pilot there. If you have any more info about this David Rees I would like to hear it. Many thanks . arculus
