Walter Thomas D'Alton
« on: Monday 22 November 04 20:31 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me find the parents/family of the above Gentleman ?

According to the 1891 and 1901 Census's he is shown as being born in Scotland, but have been unable to trace him in the 1871 and 1881 Census's.

We know he was married in Eastbourne (1887, father deceased) to a lass from Guernsey and thereafter lived in Wimbledon to his death in 1914.

According to Marriage and Death Certificates together with Census info, he was born in 1861.

Any leads or pointers in where to go from here would be gratefully received.

Thanks,

Al & Al

Have you tried http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ (pay site). They have wildcard searching which could be useful for your surname. If you can find the birth in the index, images are available to download.

Two years later and still looking to break down this brick wall  ........

In 1881 Census have found a WALTER DALTON Age 30 (ten years older , but may have lied in later years ?), who has the occupation shown as "Medical Profession Dentist" - which is very similar trade to the WTD we are seeking.

Unfortunately he is a boarder in Ealing (staying with a retired Chemist) and is shown as being born in "England". However having searched for all Births in England, none fit the criteria and we suspect that the Head of the house may have guessed age and/or birth place. Have also looked for a suitable WTD in 1871 and 1861 English Census' again without success.

Is any one able to look for a WTD in Scotland Births and/or 1861/71 Census using a Birth date of circa 1851 ??

Thanks,

Al & Al

Hi Al & Al

Have you got details of his father's name from his MC?

Hi Al & Al

On the 1861 Scottish Census, there are no entries for a Walter D*ALTON, any age....there is however an entry for an 8 yr old Walton SALTON in Cockpen,  Midlothian.

From an index search on Scotlands People , this would seem to be the SALTON family in 1861, GROS Ref: 676/00 002/00 015:

Janet, 33
John, 9
Walter, 8
Helen, 6
James, 4

One of the children, James, the youngest shows on IGI:

JAMES SALTON  Birth: 23 DEC 1856  Cockpen, Midlothian, Scotland
Parents: Father: WALTER SALTON    Mother:  JANET FRENCH

Do you think your Walter took poetic license with his name as well as his age! Could also be that the name has been mistranscribed for the Census, although  unlikely if James's birth in 1856 is also showing as Salton.  Hopefully, his father's name (occupation?) from his MC may give more clues.

Regards.

Monica

I was quite warming up on the idea of D*alton/Salton......sadly, not to be. Walter Salton is in Scotland with his mother Janet, widow, in the 1881 Census, occup. coal miner, so nowhere near what you are looking for.

However, following on the Salton theme into England, there is for example in the 1861 Census a Walter T Salton age 5 (father Walter T. an accountant, and mother Julia A.) in Kingsbury, Middlesex.

You also have that Walter T. that Capricorn found in Kent with father Robert, a labourer, and mother Mary Ann. There are a few others, but these two are the closest refs to a T. middle name.
