According to the FreeCen site there is a Grace McLean 15, female servant, living with a Hutcheson family (head was a grocer) in Kingussie in 1841.

Hi Jenc

Joe's 1851 census entry for James and Grace looks good. Lots of children showing for them on IGI including the James showing age 1 in 1851:

JAMES STRACHAN SAUNDERS  Birth: 21 JAN 1850 Auchterhouse

Also, I don't know if you have noticed, there is a birth of child showing for them in 1855, the magical year for BMDs in Scotland. 1855 the first year of official registration in Scotland resulted in BMD entries running over two pages of the register with a wealth of additional info. By 1856, this had been reduced to one page entries. It should confirm when parents were married, where they were from, how many children they had up to then (alive/deceased) etc....

WILLIAM SAUNDERS  Birth: 28 JAN 1855 Newtyle, Angus, Scotland

Regards.

Hi Joebhoy
These names and ages do indeed tally, but the census year and birthplaces don't  The family did in fact reside in the Liff and Benvie District, but not till the 1871 census  Is this coincidence that there was another family, -  James Saunders the blacksmith and Grace his wife with a 1 year old child, born in Auchterhouse, but recorded in Liff and Benvie 1851. Oh the mystery deepens.

Hello 'jenc',

Getting back to your initial question on the birth of Grace.
Is it not possible that she was born in Alvie parish in 1829 as per a record in scotlandspeople.?  Alvie parish is next door to Kingussie parish.
Joebhoy has provided the 1851 Census with birth of Grace in Badenck, Perthshire. Presumably this should be Badenoch, Inverness-shire. Both Alvie and Kingussie are in Badenoch district.

Hi Tik Tok

I found that one the other day but discounted it as the parents were William Maclean and Mary Guthrie   - 23 April 1829, Alvie.
