Charles Alfred Newman
« on: Monday 12 February 07 02:25 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am looking for information on Charles Alfred Newman who was the district registrar in Susan Street, Newtown, Sydney in the late 1800s.  He also operated a school in Newtown and was the Council Auditor in the 1860s.  A street was named after him in 1880.  He married Elizabeth Laurie in 1842 and they had 6 children Charles H b1843, Frances E L b1845, Frederick Augustus b 1846, John b 1850, William b1853 and John F b1858.  Charles was connected to Newmans in Gloucestershire in England.  His parents were probably Charles Newman and Susan Parker from Gloucestershire but they might have been his Uncle & Aunty??  Someone from Charles Alfred's family wrote to Lucy S Newman (daughter of Charles Newman and Susan Parker) on 15 May 1905:

I am hoping someone can answer the following for me:

Charles' birth date? (I can't find a suitable match on IGI)
Charles' death date? (I can't find a suitable match on NSW BDM)
Charles' immigration date?

Thank you,
Amanda

Have you tried this possible death from NSW BDM

9111/1897  NEWMAN  CHARLES A  CHARLES  CAROLINE  NEWTOWN

It could be his mother was Caroline - or it could be the informant was incorrect - or this may be someone else  :(

Thanks Trish but the Charles A Newman you mention is actually my Charles Alfred Newman's grandson who died as an infant.

Amanda

Ah - I should have checked that - Glad it was a relation  :)

I don't see a Charles A in Qld to 1914 - although a couple of Charles. There is an Albert Charles died 1894 - father Joseph - sadly no age on the Qld CDs.

I see he married at St Andrews Scots Church - I had family who married there in 1837 - nothing on the certificate except their names unfortunately - not even an age & my lass would have been lucky to be 16 (perhaps that is why it wasn't mentioned).

I will keep browsing

Hi Trish,

They married young back then didn't they.  I have GGG Grandparents who married that same year (1837) but Catholic, my GGG Grandmother was either just or not quite 14!  The certificates from that era aren't very informative, I was lucky that the marriage certificate for my GGG Grandparents had the town they were married in and also the towns they were from though.

Amanda  :)

Although I posted this 16.5 years ago, I have found reference to this post regarding this family elsewhere.
Just to confirm this has long been solved. Charles Alfred Newman was baptised in Stroud, Gloucestershire on 29 May 1815. Lucy was his youngest sister. Death has been confirmed; exact immigration details yet to be confirmed.
