GRAY Family from Semley!
« on: Saturday 17 February 07 16:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am looking for anyone who can help me with George Gray born 1779 some where in Wiltshire.
I have found a George Gray born 1779 Semley so if anyone is related to this George Gray and can tell me anything about him or the Gray family from Semley
I know that My George Gray married a lady called Priscilla ?
but do not have their marriage or her maiden name.
their children born at Winsley Bradford on Avon except their eldest daughter Rebecca she was born 1798 Winterborn Bassett
I have been knocking on this brickwall for years now.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Kind regards Christine

Have you looked for the marriage of George & Priscilla in Winterborn Bassett?
It was the custom in some families to have their first child baptised in the mother's home parish.

Hi Bearkat
No I have not looked at Winterborn Bassett yet!
I did think about this!
We have looked everywhere at the records office
but we did not know Rebecca was born at Winterborn until just a while ago.
If only I could find their marriage it may tell me all the missing bits.
we found that maybe Priscilla was born Seend Cleave Wilts but could not find their marriage there.
It will mean another trip to the records office I think.
Thanks for your help. Regards Christine

Given that George GRAY and Priscilla BURTON/BOURTON/BORTON appear to have been married at St Swithin's Walcot, Bath in 1798, I took a look yesterday at St Swithin's Walcot christenings via FreeREG/Bath Hundred Yahoo group files.

There was a George GRAY christened at St Swithin's Walcot, Bath on 12 October 1783, parents John GRAY and Mary.

This compares with "our" George GRAY being born in about 1781 according to the 1841 census and in about 1779 according to his death certificate in 1845.

Perhaps the "yes" to the "Born in Wiltshire?" question in the 1841 census might be wrong?  It wouldn't be the first time an enumerator got that one wrong.

What do you think?

(That said, the many Isaac Grays going back in the Semley records are very suggestive.  I still haven't found any likely looking children of George Gray christened in Somerset or Wiltshire between 1798 and 1805.  Perhaps there is an unrecorded/lost/untranscribed "James, son of George Gray" out there somewhere.)

I'm not sure where being the child of "John and Mary" would get us even if it is true.  Why couldn't his parents have been called Arbuthnot and Lavinia or somesuch?  ;-)

Christine - sorry my last post was inaccurate, just checked my records and re-read your first post again. I do have a Jane Gray in my line and dob is correct, as is her marriage date of 1807 but she married Jerimiah Baker not Thomas.

Jane's mother was Rebecca born c1766, that's as far as I've got on the Gray line. Sorry if I confused you and hope your research is going ok.
