Ballina Workhouse - 1901 Census - County Mayo
« on: Saturday 17 February 07 20:00 UTC (UK) »

I was wondering if there is a 1901 Census for the Ballina Workhouse or Poorhouse?  I'm not sure what they were called in Ireland.  I also believe that they didn't actually list people's names only their inititals.  Can anybody tell me if such a document exists and if so where I might get a copy please.  Also, can anyone tell me where it was situated in Ballina i.e street name or was it on the outskirts of the town? .  Thank you.

Hello Dee Melody,

The Ballina Poor Law Union Workhouse is mentioned on the Mayo Board ... [see MAYO RESOURCES & LINKS]
The Workhouse was on the west side of the town between Crossmolina Road and Old Crossmolina Road.

Christopher.  I will get in touch with the chap and see if he can point me in the right direction for obtaining the Census information for the Workhouse.  I have just received a book called Ballina Family Roots "Exploring Family Origins in Ballina".  It has the 1901 and 1911 Census but no mention of the workhouse. Thank you for your help.

Hiya Dee Melody,

The link about the Ballina Workhouse mentions that the National Archives of Ireland, Bishop Street, Dublin 8, holds the Board of Guardians' minute books and other papers. These documents may contain some information that could be useful to you.

I'm a bit puzzled as I've had a look at the Leitrim - Roscommon 1901 Census site which has a table for finding names on the Census. It says that County Mayo is now complete. I entered the word "Workhouse" in the Head of Household as instructed "To search for these records enter Workhouse in the head of household surname field on the 1901 census search page to locate these records" and found nothing.

Hello Christopher.  I did the same on the Leitrim website, hence the reason I bought the book, only to find the details are not in the book - not even a mention of the workhouse.  Strange, but I'm sure there is a perfectly logical explanation!!!  I might try the LDS people.  I will be there viewing records. I will see if they have a copy on film.

Hi Dee Melody and Chris

I also tried the Leitrim site. If you select Mayo and townland ' Ballina' .and then  put 'workhouse' in 'other enumerators' it comes up with a few staff for the workouse.
I tried all sorts - even put 'inmates' in 'other enumerators' but no luck.

The only other thing I can think of is you could maybe e-mail the library in Castlebar as I think they might hold  a copy of the original 1901 census for Mayo.
They may be able to advise you.(or e-mail the Leitrim-Roscommon site.)
How frustrating!!

Good luck

Hi Neptune.  Thanks for the tips.  I have just emailed the gentleman that handles the Leitrim web site.  I will see if he comes back with anything.  Yes it is frustrating, but all part of the 'search'.  I could kick myself because I was in Ballina/Attymass last summer searching for records.  Never mind I guess something will turn up eventually.
Thanks again

Thanks for the information, Neptune.

Since the Census shows a few of the Workhouse staff it's funny that the inmates are not shown too.

Would you update us when you get a reply from the Leitrim site, Dee Melody.

Thanks,

Chris

Chris & Neptune,
I have received a reply from Roger McDonnell who runs the Leitrim site.

Quote:  I transcribed the 1901 Census data from microfilm that I obtained through the Mormon Church.  The workhouse information only displays the initials of the individuals, because of this fact I felt it was unproductive to include this information in the census data base.  Unquote

I suppose I can see his point.  I hope this is of some help to you.

Hello again Christopher.  I do apologise for not being clearer. Mr Mcdonnel's email was exactly as I quoted.

In the meantime, I have found an entry in the book I was telling you about earlier which says the following:
quote:
Ballina (Part of Urban)
Workhouse 137 inmates listed - initials only.
Mental Asylum 25 inmates listed - initials only

Unquote:

I have phoned around today and was told the same information.  No surnnames, only the initials of the person/inmate. (i.e. JS for John Smith)  Next to the initial is the age, the area the person is from and their occupation - if you can call it that!!

I have ordered the Ballina 1901 census from LDS today to have a look at it.  I was told this was quite a common thing to do in Ireland.  As I am in the UK and have no knowledge of how other Irish Counties listed their Census I cannot comment.  I have not had to use a UK Workhouse Census, so I cannot say how they are listed either.

Apologies again for not being clearer.
Regards

Hello there Dee.

I'm John Milner Melody and alas I fear we'll have no good information for one another. I'm stuck around the mid 1800s in the U.S. but I can share what I have if you're interested. Anyway, good to say hello to kin, however distant (or questionable!) Grin
