FAWKES (Arthur) - Claybrooke/Leire/Ashby Folville
« on: Sunday 18 February 07 21:54 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to make a positive identification of Arthur Fawkes, miller, who married Mary Hopkins of Dunton Bassett and had 6 children (John, Arthur, William Hopkins, Thomas, George, James) at Ashby Folville between 1814 & 1824. He must have died before 1841 because Mary (b.1786) is living at Mill House, Ashby Folville, where the miller is now her son Arthur.

He might be the Arthur Fawkes, bapt 25.3.1752 at Claybrooke, son of Marmaduke Fawkes. This Arthur is mentioned in the will dated 1826 of his brother John Fawkes, where Arthur is described as a miller of Leire. An Arthur Fawkes - presumably the same one - was buried at Leire on 28.9.1826 aged 74 (Nat. Burial Index). But this Arthur Fawkes married Elizabeth Smith at Frolesworth on 21.11.1776 and they had at least 5 children (William, John, Susannah, Joseph, Hannah) baptised at Leire between 1778 amd 1787. Elizabeth might have died after 1787 and Arthur might then have re-married Mary Hopkins but the time-span seems improbably long. Or Arthur might have had another son called Arthur whose baptism is not recorded in the IGI.

Arthur's brother John also had a son called Arthur bapt 17.2.1778 at Claybrooke, but since he is not mentioned in John's will in 1826 I suppose he died young.

I'd be really grateful for help in identifying which Arthur Fawkes is which. The most valuable evidence would be a marriage record for Arthur Fawkes & Mary Hopkins, presumably at Dunton Bassett sometime between 1805 and 1810 (the marriage records after 1810 are in IGI).

Any trace of a death or burial record for Arthur Fawkes that could shed any light on the above would also be great.

Thank you very much
John

Hi Mike

Many thanks indeed for this. The Hopkins/Fawkes marriage isn't in IGI despite the fact that the IGI's Dunton Bassett marriages supposedly start in 1810. And Elizabeth's burial in 1794 is also new to me because it isn't in the Nat. Burial Record (where the earliest Fawkes burial at Leire is 1814). So thanks a million.

It certainly goes some way towards confirming my speculation that the Arthur Fawkes who married Mary Hopkins was the one born in 1752, but it still makes him 72 when his youngest child was born, which seems unlikely somehow although not impossible.

I guess I'd need some more wills in order to make any headway here. I'd love to hear from anybody else who is interested in the Leicestershire Fawkes family, however.

Best wishes
John

Hi Mike

That's fabulous information, thanks again ...

If Arthur was 35 in 1813 he was born c.1778. That makes him most probably the Arthur Fawkes who was bapt. 17.2.1778 at Claybrooke, son of John Fawkes & Elizabeth Higgs (IGI). The older Arthur - who married in 1776 and died at Leire in 1826 - was John's brother. I'd supposed that John's son Arthur must have died young because he was not mentioned in John's will. If so, then maybe Arthur senior had a son Arthur c.1778 but if so he is not recorded in IGI (Arthur's eldest son in IGI, William Smith Fawkes, was bapt 2.12.1778 at Leire).

Meanwhile I found the following report of a court hearing at Leicester for insolvent debtors:

Arthur Fawkes, formerly of Great Claybrook Mill, Leicestershire,
Journeyman Miller, afterwards of Leir, Leicestershire,
Baker, afterwards of Leir aforesaid, Baker and Licensed Beer
Seller, afterwards Omnibus Driver to Mr. Till, of Little Harcourt-
Street, London, and late of Leir aforesaid, Licensed
Beer-Seller, and Working as Journeyman Miller, of Great
Claybrook Mill aforesaid.
Source: London Gazette, 26.2.1833.

Since Arthur Fawkes senior died in 1826 this can't be him, so it must refer to the younger Arthur who married Mary Hopkins.

So your information brings me a big step forward. The only question now is, is Arthur the son of John Fawkes or an unrecorded son of Arthur senior?

All best wishes
John
