Double Barelled Surnames

I have just discovered a relative using a double barelled surname in 1889, how common was this practice ?  would like to hear from anyone else who has experience of  this.

Yes i have found this a few times there is a thread about it some where on this site
                   I have came a cross a few now ,
                       I  have a Henry Prince Ballard
                                      Richard Baxter prince B.......
      and in this case it was the mothers maiden name in the middle !
