Patterson Family
« on: Thursday 22 February 07 23:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, Trying to trace my dad's people.  His mother was Jane Patterson who married William Ward [Hartlepool - he wasn't a traveller, but a very clever musical man who then took up with her way of life and went travelling in wagon].  I know my dad had lots of cousins tied up with Blackpool golden mile, [he called them the black faced uns].  Also his brother Dicky Ward married Lucy Keating [always went with fairs/circus - hot dog stall and hoopla stalls I think].  Any help in starting this 'tree' would be appreciated.  I just wish I had taped all the stories my dad used to tell me, staying in villages and the locals talking about the gypsy children, he always said they weren't gypsys but travellers.  Thanks a lot, whpool

Do you have William and Jane's marriage cert?  That will give their ages and their fathers' names, which will help us trace them back on censuses.

they say they werent "Gypsies" but "Travellers" cos "Gypsies" is the Gorja description - a derogative of "Egyptians" - as they were originally described. (a fallacy, they came not out of Egypt but out of India as Romany language has its root  in Sanskrit).

Many are those who prefer to be called simply "Travellers" today, to avoid what they percieve to be persecution.

To the romanies, "gypsy is the same as gyppo".

Hi An65 - thanks for the note - my g.mother Lovinia Pattison was infact from romany stock, still living in wagons when she met my g.father William Ward [a gorje]. On my mothers side -her g.mother was Esmerelda Boswell who married a Ross.  As a child we went to most north country fairs [Appleby, Brough etc] but always lived in a house, my father insisting we had an education as he was deprived of schooling - as most of them were.  The problem I'm finding is that you can't really confirm their ages/dates!!! anyway , all very interesting. Thanks again

You refer to your grandmother by 2 different names: Jane and Lovinia, so is this her birth registration?

Hello there Charlene - yes we're the same family.  It's a while since I've done any more family history, your post just popped up today.  I remember the King family - used to go to the different funerals with my dad Henry Ward. Still in touch with Aunt Sweethearts g.daughter Linda [via facebook]. Would like to see the pic of granny Mot if possible. xx
