What should this place be ?
« on: Sunday 25 February 07 00:24 GMT (UK) »
Hello

On three England censuses there is a Francis Lewis born c1830 with his birth place recorded as follows :-

1851 HO107/2459 Folio 248 Page 21 - Abugwilly, Carmarthenshire

1861 RG9/3706 Folio 95 Page 16 - Abergwelly, Glamorgan

1871 RG10/4926 Folio 76 Page 39 - Abegwilla, Carmarthenshire

Could someone please advise me what the correct version of this place name should be ?

Hi DS

I suspect Abergwili - the spelling does vary a lot!

Not sure why anyone would say it is in Glamorgan - maybe that is where the census was taken?

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

there's an Abergelly Road in Fforestfach, but other than that I'd go for Carmarthenshire.

I have found him in Merthyr in 1851 and it definitely says Abergwilly on the census image.

Do you have his parents' names so that we might look for him in 1841?

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Edit: he is probably the son of William and Ann - and hence already in Glamorgan in 1841.  Shame!

Hello everyone and many thanks for looking.

I thought that the consistent presence of the “w” over thirty years must be significant.

I am now convinced that Arranroots has identified the correct place for me and I have since found it on the Gazetteer spelled in the way shown (Abergwili). I tried before to find it on the Gazetteer and I must have used every possible spelling except that one !

I did not know his parents names. I was tracking backwards and doing fine whilst he was in England. Then I encountered a plethora of Francis Lewis names in Wales and none of them showed anything like the birth places mentioned above.

I think (again, Thanks to Arranroots) that I might now have a good idea who his parents were.

Cheers

Hi osprey

A belated thank you for the link which you provided. I have now added that to my list of Bookmarks to use in future.

If I had used this one before I think that I would have probably found Abergwili (which is listed).

I was using the OS Gazetteer and everything that I tried came back with “No place name results found for your search”

Thanks again
