Can anyone help me find more information on Rowley Hall? My grandmother was born illegitimately in 1919 and taken into 'guardianship' by two Christian sisters. We know that she lived in varoius places in her childhood, one of which was Rowley Hall in Stafford. She used to talk about the 'naughty girls' who lived there and worked in the Laundry. Was this some kind of reformatory home for girls?

I have found information on Rowley Hall in the mid- to late 1880's but can't find much else into the 1900's.

Anything anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated!  ;D

Hello,

For a some time from the thirties, Rowley Hall was used as an Approved School for girls.  Since 1987 it has been a Private Hospital.

Hi Rowena,

A couple of articles in the Times mention Rowley Hall.

Tues July 1st 1919

A Merchants Large Estate

Mr Reginald Blair Dobell, of Rowley Hall, Staffs, died on March 31st.

The testator gives to his wife during widowhood the use and enjoyment of Rowley Hall.

Mon January 17th 1938

Rowley Hall School Stafford

Head required for the above Approved (Home Office) school, accomodation for about 50 girls aged 15 to 17 on admission.

I couldn't find anything between these dates though... :-\

I was at Rowley Hall circa 1970.  It was a reformed school - designed to reform some young ladies!  Did a great 'job' for me, very much value the experience in my adult life although at the time it was hard...
I did not derserve the placement (long story) and I have noticed that there is not much written about the time or circumstance.  Please feel free to contact me if you would like any details...

Dear Wendy,

Nice to see Rowley Hall Girls School mentioned  . . I came across a few negatives the other day which showed the opening by Sir Thomas Salt of the school's new outdoor swimming pool in 1964  - would the pool have been in existence when you were there?  And who were the head/teachers?  I need the info for  a newspaper article. :)
