Harland-Wolff Shipbuilders employee
« on: Sunday 25 February 07 23:14 GMT (UK) »
Is there any available information re the identification of employees during Titanic construction?  My Great Aunt's husband JOHN WINDER worked there.  We were told he was a Master Platelayer.

Thanks

Hello Adee,

PRONI have a large archive of Harland and Wolff documents. The fifty year rule is not being applied but all members of the public are required to submit a written request to Harland & Wolff, through PRONI, seeking access to the records of whatever date.

I hope I've understood your question correctly as the same question appears in Antrim Completed Look Ups.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the information about Harland & Wolff.

As with many families, stories and facts are sometimes difficult to prove (or disprove).

I will check out the website mentioned.

Regards,      Kathleen

Hiya Kathleen,

Have you looked at the Harland and Wolff Islandmen Project on the Antrim Resources board? The Project relates to a collection of ID cards of people who worked in the yards. The cards were purchased in a job lot at an auction. The guy who is running the Project would like to hear from either the owner of the card, or relations of the owner, and get some stories about work in the yards for his website.

Hello adee,

I spoke with someone at PRONI this afternoon. The Titanic was built in 1912 ... the records for the shipyards for the period 1875 to 1922 are open for viewing so you
should be able to find something about your great aunt's husband.

I don't think they will be on line ... I can't see it happening in the immediate future.
