1841-1851 Census - JENKINS, REES
« on: Wednesday 28 February 07 04:00 GMT (UK) »
Need help for the following families.

John JENKINS (b. Llangendeirne) married Mary REES (b. Llanelly) on July 26, 1858 and at that time were living in Seaside, Llanelly.

So, in the 1851 Census I would like to find John's family:

Richard JENKINS  Head   age ?  Farm Labourer
John JENKINS      Son      age 15

Don't know much more, not even Richard's wife, but they could have been living in Llangendeirne at that time.

Also, for Mary's family, not much there either, she would have been 19 in 1851 and possibly living at home, her father was Griffith REES, and in 1858 was a Furnaceman in a Coppperworks, more than likely in Llanelly, as Mary was born there.

Any further info. on these families woud be greatly appreciated, many thanks in advance.

Allan

best match I've found for Mary
1841 Columbia Row, Wern, Llanelly H0107/1379/6 folio 34 pg 18
Griffith Rees 40 copperman
Margaret 35
Thomas 10
Mary 8
Edward 6
Anne 3
Edward 8
all born in county
The 8 year old Edward is marked as a separate household, but same surname. Probably related, but the joys of the 1841 - no relationships.

1851 Columbia Row, Wern H0107/2468 folio 212 pg 47
Griffith Rees head mar 52 copperman b. Glamorgan, Llangyfelach
Margaret wife 47
Griffith son 27 railway labourer
Thomas son 20 copperworks haulier
Edward son 16 copperworks haulier
Anne dau 14 at home
all apart from head born Llanelly.
few possibles for Mary working as a servant, but no way of knowing which one is her.

1841 Tynewidd, Hamlets of Llan & Bleine(?), Llangendeirne H0107/1385/13 folio 16 pg 25
Richard Jenkin 35 ag lab
Ann 40
Mary 12
John 7
William 4
Margaret 9 months
all born in county
Aah - 9 months old gives you a chance of finding a birth certificate giving mother's maiden name, if she was registered as many were not during early years of registration. But only one shows up on FreeBmd
Margaret Rees dec qtr 1840 Carmarthen vol 26 pg 450

1851 Tynewydd, Bline, Llangendeirne H0107/2472 folio 186 pg 16
Richard Jenkin head mar 54 farm labourer
Ann wife 53
Margaret dau 9
all born Llangendeirne

possible for John as farm servant also in Bline.
Can't find Bline in this area, but there is a Blaenau on the Genuki page for Llangendeirne.

Many thanks for this. I'm now on the right track (I think), but with a little more 'digging' I'll be more certain.

Seems strange that the REES family lived in the same street as my g.mother! who lived there until she passed away in 1961.

Would it be possible to get both these families in the 1861 Census? Just wondering if Richard and Ann had more children after 1851, (and were still alive) or if Griffith and Margaret were still alive.

Many thanks again     :)

here you go
1861 Columbia Street, Llanelly RG9/4112 folio 19 pg 32
John Edwards head mar 23 labourer iron foundry b. Llanelly
Ann wife 23 b. Llanelly
Hannah dau 2 b. Llanelly
Joseph son 1 month b. Llanelly
Griffith Rees father in law widower 68 labourer copper works b. Glam, Llangyfelach

Ages are not given on death index at this time, so impossible to tell which of the 16 deaths registered in Llanelly between 1851 and 1861 is the correct Margaret Rees.
No sign of Griffith on the 1871 census, but only 2 deaths for that name
Griffith Rees dec qtr 1862 Llanelli vol 11a pg 317
dec qtr 1865 Llanelli vol 11a pg 601

1861 Ty Newydd Llangendeirne, RG9/4135 folio 42 pg 5
Richard Jenkin head mar 63 labourer
Anne wife 66
both born Llangendeirne

neither are on the 1871 census - possible death registrations
Ann Jenkins march qtr 1864 Carmarthen vol 11a pg 302
march qtr 1865 Carmarthen vol 11a pg 601
Richard Jenkins age 71 sept qtr 1868 Carmarthen 11a pg 302

hope this helps
