1861 census lookup please - PAYNE
« on: Thursday 01 March 07 05:56 GMT (UK) »
Hello

Could somebody please check the 1861 census please, possibly in the Newmarket area.
I am looking for Hannah PAYNE aged 51, George PAYNE aged 28, and Charles PAYNE aged 24.
I am interested in their birth place, and which other relatives may be living with them, in order to confirm whether I have the correct family or not.

Thanking you, Rob

The marriage I found in Flempton cum Hengrave between Samuel and Hannah looks increasingly promising as its near Bury St. Edmunds and Beyton.

Hi Suffolksue
That really is a good discovery of yours.  I presumed that Hannah would have to remarry after Samuel's departure, so that is good detective stuff to find her marriage details.  And you are probably correct now about the earlier marriage in Flempton if her son George was born at Bury St Edmunds.
Since Charles on the census was also born at Kelsale in ~1839, then Edward of course could be the father of Charles as well, although he was only 16 at the time, and Samuel was certainly not around then.

The reason I was enquiring about the 1861 census for Newmarket is that George and Hannah and Charles were all married there, which is a bit coincidental for those three names.

thanks again for the news
Rob

Yes, Edward and Hannah, along with their 5 youngest children from the 1851 census, and Hannah aged 20 from the first marriage, arrived Sydney 25/10/1854.
And suffolk*sue has given you the correct details for the marriage.
Good to hear from you after 10 years since our last Payne chat...
regards, Rob

Hannah was born 6 July 1834 in Kelsale, daughter of Samuel and Hannah Payne. Samuel was a convict sent to Australia in 1837, and his wife remarried in 1844 to Edward Coleman.

Hannah married Alfred Lainson in Sydney 1855 and had 5 children before Alfred died in 1870 in Melbourne.
Hannah married again in Melbourne 1883, to her step father Edward Coleman.

I haven't researched Hannah's family, but maybe I can help more with her parents.
Regards, Rob
