Any Meara/ Mara/ Marah connections in Oz?
« on: Thursday 01 March 07 09:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks, having a bit of a "dry" spell.... and you know how boring that can get!.....and got to wondering if there are any rellies anywhere in Australia.

Supposedly...according to family legend  :-\ ...my Grandad's cousins Timothy and William Meara emigrated sometime in the late 1800's.
They were probably from Co Kerry.

That's all I know...not a lot is it  ::)

Thanks for those, OziBob
Gosh there's quite a few aren't there! Maybe all too early for my Mearas, Grandad was born in 1885 so I imagine, even given that his cousins were possibly quite a bit older, that they would have emigrated in the 1880-90's. Also I don't kmow which state they ended up in which doesn't help  :-\
Something to think about though
cheers Sylvia  :)

What are their parent's names? we may be able to find their deaths in the indexes (if the right parents names are recorded for them) and locate them that way.

Omeara / OMara , etc,  was an extremely popular name in Victoria, with or without the O.

Hi Christine
Sorry I have no idea who their parents were.

Granddad was born 1885 in Scotland, his mother was Sarah Marah born 1859 in Co Kerry, married in Scotland. Sarah Marah's parents were John Meara and Catherine McClure.

It's so hard though to get a handle on this family, you know what Irish research is like, Kerry especially
