Birt/Burt - Dorset question
« on: Thursday 25 November 04 11:28 GMT (UK) »
I have a marriage for Eliza Birt to Richard Trowsdale, 2 Oct 1823 at St Martin Outwich, London.  Eliza's place of birth is noted as Canford, Dorset.  born approx 1800.  I have looked on the IGI and have found several possible births.  Thing is I know nothing much about Dorset geography.  There are births that look promising in the following which are geographically in the right place, I am favouring Sturminster Marshall since I think it's close to Canford:

Sturminster Marshall
Winfrith Newburgh
Corscombe

Can anyone help on this?

Thanks
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan,

GENUKI says this about Canford:

Poole
Created 1st July 1837.
Sub-districts : Canford; Lytchett; Lychett Minster; Poole.
GRO volumes : VIII (1837-51); 5a (1852-1930).
Branksome, Canford Magna, Hamworthy, Kinson, Longfleet, Lytchett Matravers, Lytchett Minster, Parkstone, Poole.
Registers now in Poole district.

I looked on Dorset OPC - http://www.dorset-opc.com/ , found 38 entries for BIRT and  253 for BURT (first name and surname !) and even 28 entries for "eliza birt" but, sadly, no baptism record.

Good luck !

Your message caught my eye as I also have BURTs in my family - however, as far as I know, the family came from the Middlesex area.

To get a clearer picture of the Dorset area, you might care to take a look at the following website and follow the links for 'Genealogy':

Good luck in your research!

Best wishes
