Can't read name of village/town?
« on: Tuesday 06 March 07 17:10 GMT (UK) »
On the 1851 census a relative is written as having been born in Stokwich Worcestershire. I can't find the place. Can anyone help with its location?

Hi could it be Stoke Bliss, which is just outside of Tenbury? Could be a misinterpretation of what your relative said at the time of the enumeration. Just a suggestion, but like Newfy said would be best to have a look at the original census page.

Kate.

OK, dont worry - have found it ... Mary Price - Granddau ..... hmmmm, see what you mean   :D

HO107/2492; Folio: 233; Page: 5

The only ~~~wich I can think of is Droitwich - have you found her in 1861 ?

I see that Mary is with her 'Irish' granny there in 1841 too, but a 'Y' to born in Herefordshire ....

Tried Parish Registers ?

Hi Newfy, can't be sure that I've found her on 1861 - the only mary price where the birthplace looks reasonable, looks something like Rishook (RG9/2090 folio 73 pg28). The only reason I'm looking for her birthplace is to try and find her father's name from parish registers, as the irish granny Margaret Price married twice (2nd time to my ancestor) and this is the only way I can think of tracing back to what Margaret's maiden name was.

Thanks

Sian (grasping at straws as usual)

There is "Stockwith" (both East and West), but they are in Notts, near Doncaster, and close to the Lincs border.  Not sure that helps at all  ???

Rishook - Is that Rushock ?
There's one NW of Droitwich in Worcestershire and one near Kington in Herefordshire

Thanks PrueM, it's definitely not Notts as she was born in the county of Worcs according to the census.

EBN that sounds possible, I shall try looking in the Worcs one first. Thanks for the help.

When was Mary born ?  I wondered about Stoke Prior which had a salt works near to Droitwich, and whether it got called Stokwich.
In 1834 there is a baptism of Mary Price there
