First World War Internees
« on: Tuesday 13 March 07 18:41 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to trace what happened to my grandfather Edward Leopold Jay (or possibly just Leopold Johnson) after he was interned at Lancaster (the old Waggon Works) in 1914. This dump was shut down quite soon but what happened then? I believe he was born in Konigsberg, Germany (now Kaliningrad, Russia) and he worked as a tailor in places such as Sheffield, Cologne, London and - just before the war - Newport, Mon. The family were not reunited after the war. There is an Edward L Jay listed in a Liverpool telephone directory in 1939/40 but is the same person?

www.imagesofengland.org.uk has a photo and description of the camp at Lancaster - IoE number: 383096.

A book of interest:
Graves, Robert. Goodbye to All That.  Graves was the officer in charge of the camp at Lancaster.

Have you checked The National Archives for a naturalisation record for him?

You say that the family was not reunited after the war, presumably WW1.  Do you know for certain that he remained in Britain after WW1?  Many, if not most, were deported towards the end of, and in the years after, the war.  It is quite difficult to trace most of them.  For more info, go to the Search function, and search for "internments", to see other threads on this topic, and other people's experiences.
