No it wasn't Applecross. I had another look last night and found one in Edderton but her father was a techer and one here (Alexis, Lochbroom - Polbain) but her mother was a Margaret  :(

I was going to have another look using her mother's name and age - she might just not have been born in the 1841 - they could have rounded up her age at death - but all of the dates bar one seem to suggest a 1838-9 birth  :-\

However, it's our first really Spring-like day and the gardening beckons  :o

I've had a (long) go at tracing back Isabella who died in 1882 in Edderton and I think I have to put up the white flag now!

I can trace her in the 1871 and 1881 with confidence but that's all. I have run through the 1841 (which is the critical one to find Alexa in the home) and 1851/61 and I cannot connect the entries there.

1881:

Isabella, 78, widow, ag. lab., b. Lochbroom
Isabella, 49, daugh, unm., ag. lab., b. Lochbroom
Henny, 43, daugh, unm., ag. lab., b. Lochbroom

Address: Carry blair, Eddeton (matches address on DC). Everyone b. Lochbroom

1871:

Isabella, 70, head,
Mary, 41, ag. lab.
Isabella, 39, ag. lab
Henrietta, 34, ag. lab.

Address: Muir Pauper House, Edderton

Even with the potential sisters to Alexa, I still cannot see the household together in 1841  :'(

Regards.

Monica

Hiya,

your Lexy is in the 1841 census at Reiff, mistakedly enumerated as "Alex" in the males column. She was christened "Lexy" 11 August 1834 at Reiff.

Jno McLeod                                55      Cotter
Angus McLeod                               9
Isabella McLeod                              40
Isabella McLeod                              15
Peggy McLeod                                 10
Doliena McLeod                                8
Alex McLeod                                5

There is some descent traced for Lexy's sister Peggy, you can follow the links up and down the tree at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~coigach/n41reiff.htm#13

All the best,

Donald.

I did not notice the thread till now...

Rule of thumb for Coigach genealogy is if there is a surname McLean start looking at Altandhu, then extend the circle.. In 1841 12 of the 16 households there were McLeans.. seeing MacLeod directed me to Reiff, and there was young "Alex", 6 households after my MacLeod ancestors, and 5 before my MacDonald ancestors...

All the best,

Yup! and a crop on Tanera.... but Altandhu is a good bet to start in most cases...

MacLeod (68)
MacDonald (22)
MacLean (20)
Campbell (17)
Fraser (13)
Ross (13)
MacRae (12)
Munro (10)
Urquhart (8)
MacLennan (7)
Cameron (6)
Stewart (6)
MacAulay (5)
Matheson (5)
Morrison (5)
Grant (4)
MacGregor (4)
MacPherson (3)
Graham (2)
Kerr (2)
Lamand (2)
McLea (2)
MacPhail (2)
Bain (1)
Bethune (1)
Bunchail (1)
Carmichael (1)
Imack (1)
McKillikan (1)
