The Times
« on: Saturday 17 March 07 12:33 GMT (UK) »
Recently some kind listers gave me information on an ancestor, George Weakner, which they had found on a website cotaining records of The Times Newspaper. The website was not 'free access' so  I couldn't use it personally. I have since found out my local library has it and I can access it through their website. My question is on navigation through the site. How for example would you find info on George Weakner in 1842. I entered the name but with no results. Any help gratefully received!
Michael

Hi Stan

Thank you for helping Michael with his query, but I think he wanted help with navigating the site.

Do you think that by entering "Captain Weakner" he will easily find the record, or does he need further advice?

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

I just entered Weakner for the year 1842. I have found that it is usually advisable to enter the minimum search term. You can limit the search to between certain dates, in this case 1st January 1842 and 31st December 1842.

The search engine on the Times is some sort of OCR, and particularly on early editions it may miss names; people are also often mentioned with intials or just titles.  I would agree with Stan and add that sometimes you can find interesting things by just searching on the name of a road.

Thanks all for the advice. I was hoping there would be a more global search faclity but I
guess I will have to settle for limited search by date.

There's certainly no need to limit the search by date, just enter the search term you're interested and it will search all 200 years - you might find that you get rather too many hits though (although weakner only gives 21 citations, the first in 1794 the last 1983). You can also limit the search to certain types of articles (people is a good category, for example, giving birth marriage & death notices amongst others), to headlines or full text and do the usual Boolean (AND, OR, NOT) searches too.

Make sure that the in entire article content button is clicked.
