Eccles, Flax Miller, Kildress 1840's
« on: Saturday 17 March 07 15:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

My Granda's grandfather James Eccles b.1829/30 was married in 1854 in Consett Co. Durham England, his parents were listed as John and Ellen Eccles of Kildress.
In Slaters directory 1846, there is a John Eccles  listed as a Flax Miller in  Kildress.
Does anyone know of a list/map of Flax mills in the Kildress area and their locations?

regards
Rewcastle

Hiya,

Your ancestor's mill is probably listed in William E. Hogg's book "The Millers & Mills of Ireland of about 1850."

Hi Rewcastle,

I checked the "Millers & Mills of Ireland of About 1850" - unfortunately there are no mills listed in Kildress Parish as owned by the Eccles family.

The following are listed for Kildress:

Townland:
Corkhill - Unoccupied/ Caroline Irwin: Beetling Mill & Office
             - William Black: House Office & Land; Flax Mill
Corvanaghan - Thomas Charles: House Office & Land; Corn Mill & Flax Mill.

There is a John Eccles listed in the Parish of Clonoe, Annagher Townland (near Coalisland, which is about 8 miles south of Cookstown):

John Eccles: House, Office, Corn Mill & Land
Thomas Donaghy/John Eccles [Mill Workers]: House & Land.

As James' dob was before Civil Registration, church records at PRONI may help - if I have time I may be able to check the next time I am in PRONI.  Do you know their denomination?

Regards,

Eddie

There was indeed a flax mill in the townland of Mackenny, Kildress Parish, about 3 miles from Cookstown, where the Upper Kildress Road joins the Mackenny Road, a short distance from the A505. The mill was owned by an Eccles family, drew water from the Ballinderry River, and was in use in the 1940s, until it was sold to McAllister family. Old Kildress Parish Church and Drum Manor (National Trust) are nearby. The Welbrook Mill (National Trust) is 2miles distant.
