Morton Engine
« on: Saturday 27 November 04 09:31 GMT (UK) »
On some of the Census returns one of my ancestors married a woman whith Morton Engine as her place of birth. Their children are also said to be born at Morton Engine.  On a later one I see them living at Morton Engine Row, Morton Grange.

Would I be right in thinking that this means the later address is correct in all cases, and the earlier references were just not fully put down? Or was the name change a later addition?

Any information would be helpful, thanks.

It looks as if there was an area within Morton Grange (town?) known as Morton Engine and that Morton Engine Row was in this area.

I realise that this is an od posting, however I can give some information.  Morton Engine was a pumping engine that served Lambton Lady Anne Pit and Lambton D Pit.  It was located about 200 metres east of Lambton Lady Anne Pit in the area that at one time was known as 'Morton' and is now known as 'Fence Houses'.  According to the map that I have seen there were up to four cottages at Morton Engine.

Hope that this helps.

Thank you for the clarification, I have now found family at Fencehouses as well as Morton Engine. Clearly they stayed around.
