ThanksCraizi, but I think it's a different family.  From all accounts william was a labourer.

Farlane, Garman it could well be in 1861 too  ;)  A few more children showing for them born pre official reg. in 1855:

William Garman    34, labour docker, b. Ireland
Biddy Garman    35, b. Ireland
William J Garman 12, b. Ireland
Mary Jane Garman 10, b. Greenock
Edward Garman    7, b. Greenock
Jean Garman    1, b. Greenock

Address:  53 Vennel, Greenock West

The sticky point on this entry is that there is no James showing b. 1860 (and he shows as alive in 1871). Unless the Jean in the census is actually a James on the original image?

Regards.

Monica

Just tried to use my remaining credits on Scotlandspeople to look at the original and found they've expired! Knowing the problems I've had with Jean and Jane as my ancester Jean and James aren't that different?

best wishes, Fairlane
