Hi Bryce, I’m sorry to say I am not familiar with those names . However ,I can tell you that there were two workhouses in Lacock. One tiny one that looks like a village house and then the GB law was about to change and George Banks a mason and John Gale a carpenter built a large new premises opposite the Lacock village church named St Cyriacs.
At the moment I am in Southern Ireland on another genealogy trail of my mother’s Irish family. I’ll be home in a week or so and look in my records for you.  My late father and aunt started the Banks family research of Lacock around 1946. I have dozens of files that I have inherited.  Dad was a firm believer in negative information being positive because it ruled someone out ! He had a few short articles published in the Wiltshire Recorder which has articles about family history. One of his interests, there were dozens ! , was the workhouse. I know he had info about food and training because I used it with the children I taught.
Dad also has files full of Records about the village. It may well be that your family names may yet be among them. Although Dad was ninety six, he could use a computer but mainly used old fasioned pencil and paper !
A coincidence is your name .   Another part of my Wiltshire family ended up in SAN Francisco where two boys were born. One named Bryce. They returned to the U.K. with their mother around 1870s ( need to check dates ) but sadly ,we think Bryce died as his name disappears from all records.
I’ll do some checking of paper work when I return home. I may yet find something.
Regards Maggie

"Does any of this sound familiar to you?"

No, it doesn't sound familiar but I wonder if I might tie into it somehow.  I have John Banks [abt. 1780 - 1836, Castle Combe, Wiltshire] who married Elizabeth Jones [abt. 1790 - 1782, Chippenham, Wiltshire] in 1804 in Castle Combe.  They had, as best I can make out, 13 children:  John Jones, Frances, William, Worthy [my ggg-grandfather], Jane, Charlotte, Eliza, Samuel Simon, Silas, Elizabeth, Enoch, Ann and Jesse.
Wiltshire:  Banks, Taylor
Somerset:  Duddridge, Richards, Barnard, Pillinger
Gloucestershire:  Barnard, Marsh, Crossman
Bristol:  Banks, Duddridge, Barnard
Down:  Ennis, McGee
Wicklow:  Chapman, Pepper
Wigtownshire:  Logan, Conning

Hi Maggie,
I appreciate anything you can find.  It seems as though the custom of giving a middle name or even two middle names was popular.  That would lead me to think they would help identify a father or even a grandfather but nothing has come from it.  Names like William Solomon Banks Jones or David Abdie Jackson Jones should provide clues, but so far I have not found anything.

The name Bryce (or Brice) is a family name on my mother's side and runs for generations through that family line, mostly the Selby line in the USA.

Good luck on your Irish quest.

Erato.
Thank you for responding.  With the closeness to those names you have inspired me to keep digging.  There may be a light at the end of the tunnel.
Thanks
Bryce

Hi Bryce, looking at the very long and detailed family tree,I can only find an Elizabeth Banks born 1813 and died 1876 in Lacock. There is no reference to a marriage. She was the daughter of George Banks and Ann Selma. They all lived and died in Lavock so I don’t think there can be a link.   I’ve also looked at your other middle names and can find no repition or link there.  Sorry, but I think you must be from another branch.  It’s made me look back on notes and detail from other family members that I inherited, and although not a direct line, our family goes back to 1480s in Lacock. And I hadn’t picked that up until looking for your info this morning !   Good luck with your search.

Good day,
I am new to this site. I read with much interest the information on the Banks (family name) in Wiltshire. I have been working on our family's ancestral research for about 5 years. My late mother, Madeline Mavis Logan (born Banks), was a descendant of Lacock's William Banks. William Banks was a British settler to the Cape of Good Hope in 1820, in what was then known as Albany.

My family research revealed that William Banks was baptized in the Saint Cyriac church in Lacock on September 24, 1797 (the date is unconfirmed). On December 24, 1816, he wed Sarah Edwards in the same church (I have a copy of their marriage certificate). The occupation of William Banks was listed as a basket maker.
I live in Cape Town and visited Wiltshire in August 2023 for my son and his fiance's wedding, so visiting Lacock, particularly the St Cyriac church, was of particular interest to me. Lacock's beauty and history captivated me, and I was eager to learn more.
Unfortunately, my research only goes back to His father and mother, Edward and Ann Banks (I don't know what her maiden name was).

I am hoping by posting this that I can make contact with someone to facilitate further ancestral research.

Image of the parish register is on ancestry
William son of Edward and Ann Banks bap. 24 September 1797
Richard son of Edward and Ann Banks bap. 24 September 1797

No birth dates listed obviously brothers but it does not indicate twins.

There is also a Robert Banks son of Daniel and Betty bap. 25 December 1797.  Daniel and Edward possibly related.

"There is also a Robert Banks son of Daniel and Betty bap. 25 December 1797."

Here is something interesting:  It appears as though Robert Banks (b1797) had a brother named James (b1777).  James married Elizabeth Uncles in 1802.  The Banks family must have known my Jones family because Elizabeth Banks Uncles was a witness to the marriage of William Jones and Sarah Banks in Chippenham in 1821. I believe William and Sarah are the parents of my great grandfather, David Abdie Jackson Jones.
