Hi

In 'Huddersfield, A Most Handsome Town' (E.A.Hilary Haigh 1992) it says of the George Street Chapel:
"An independent chapel in George Street, affiliated to the Evangelical Union, built in 1856, was bought by the Congregationalists in 1870 to replace South Street and was home to a church from 1884 to 1887".

Hi Lesley, Hi Mirf :)

Thanks for the info from the book, pity it didn't have a picture, but good information all the same  ;)

Mirf, is there any way I can contact the Huddersfield Local History Dept @ Huddersfield Library from abroad? I am in Australia, but would love to see if they have a picture!

Thanks again guys

Hi

I have not seen any records for George Street chapel and I would say that it did not have a graveyard.
The Highfield Chapel which is now flats had a graveyard. The Highfield Funeral Home as nothing to do with the chapel and it is off Trinity Street.

Hi Philip,

That would be amazing if I could see a picture of the George Street Chapel!!! I have been wondering what it looked like for a while now :)

I will PM you with my e-mail address so that we can exchange info if anything turns up at the library...welcome to Rootschat too  ;D ;D ;D

Hi John,

I am not too concerned about burials at George Street as another Rootschatter found that my family are buried as below:

A fellow rootschatter has located the grave of both the Rev Robert Stainton and his first wife Elizabeth Stainton (nee Warburton). They are buried in Edgerton Cemetery, New North Road, Huddersfield.

But I would love to find the baptism records for his sons though so maybe Dr William's Library will be able to help?

It is a pity there are no baptismal records for the Chapel as I am almost certain that he would have baptised his sons there, do you think they would be recorded elsewhere?
