Boarding school at Gainford Durham
« on: Friday 06 April 07 11:10 BST (UK) »
Hi

My fathers great aunt Elizabeth Anne Milburn went to work at the boarding school in Gainford and later married Ferdinand Bowman who was a school master at the boarding school (later Head) in Gainford - his father William was head in 1871 and in previous years

Would anyone anymore about the school or of a website that would perhaps give more details of it all - i have been looking but can't seem to find anything specific about the school it seemed to be a large one judging by the number of pupils that attended.  I would really like to be able to find more information and a picture of

thanks
k

If you go to
http://www.tomorrows-history.com/mapping/maps.htm and search for Gainford you will see the school, on The Green, on the 1894-1899 map only. It is not in the 1914 Directory. The Rev. William Bowman is shown in the 1890 directory and Ferdinand Erenest Bowman in the 1902 directory where the address is given as North Terrace, Gainford..
There are a two of photographs of North Terrace on the site given by Jane, and I would assume that the school is one of the buildings.

Thank Stan and Jane

Will have a look at these links - it was Ferdinand's father William i think that started the school - have found some reference to the letters and plans but am still trying to figure out how to order them or view them.

Thanks again for your help :)

I remember picnics by the river in Gainford as a child. There was a 'naughty boys' boarding school nearby, my Aunty used to threaten my cousin saying she would send him there if he didn't behave!

I may be wrong but I think this is the Gainford Academy, where Stan Laurel had the early part of his education?

It would be as there was only one private boarding school for boys in Gainford.

Well this quote from the website would point to the 'naughty boys'!

".....however he neglected his school work and was sent to Gainford Academy near to Barnard Castle."
