Higgs, Bridgnorth

Hi there,
Just a quick note wondering if anyone can help with the Higgs family of Bridgnorth?
They were a very large family very prominent in Bridgnorth life during the early 1900's
John James Higgs is probably the most well-known
 ( mayor twice) I am trying to sort out John James' mother Emma.
Here is the story so far - Emma Scriven born Alveley 1847 married local butcher William Higgs. They have seven children William Henry, John James, Arthur, Emma, Annie,Sydney and Robert.
During the early 1890's they ran a butcher shop in High Town Bridgnorth.
William died following an butchery accident in 1893. The children then carried on the business.
But what happened to their mother Emma ??
I think she may have married a man called Joseph Oakley around 1900 but I'm not sure. I can't see her on the 1901 census ( or perharps I have my eyes shut this morning !)
Any help much appreciated

That's marvellous !
Very spooky - when I lived in Bridgnorth I used to walk past "number 36 cartway" every morning on my way to work !

You may be interested in these events that mention the family. All found in the local newspaper, the Bridgnorth Journal;

29 July 1893 issue; Died on 7 July, William HIGGS, age 54.

3 June 1893 issue; Married on 30th May in St Mary's, Bridgnorth. John James HIGGS, second son of William HIGGS, Butcher, to Annie ANDREWS, youngest dau of George ANDREWS of Underhill Street.

31 May 1890 issue; Died on 27 May at 36 Underhill St, Jane OAKLEY, beloved wife of Joseph OAKLEY. Age 42.

Are these also yours?
25 Feb 1888 issue; Died on the 9th and 19th Feb in Strangeways, Manchester, Alfred and Emma HIGGS, Late of Bridgnorth.

In the 27 Aug 1904 issue; Married on 24th Aug at St Leonard's, Bridgnorth. Sidney, youngest son of the Late William HIGGS – Butcher of Bridgnorth to Florence Annie, only dau of Mrs COOPER of Whitburn Street.

I'm looking for more information on all things Johan James Higgs. More specifically about his children.

My father was born to Petrus Cairncross Higgs who was the grandson of John James and we are looking to find out more about the Higgs name and where we came from.

i have studying the bridgnorth higgs family for nearly 40 years, and never heard the name mentioned

Hello,

I am researching the Higgs line which dates back to the death of John Higgs in 1776 in Penn, Wolverhampton (birth date unknown). I wonder whether your line is connected to mine? How far back have you gone along the Bridgnorth branch?

There are theories that my line goes back further through a Thomas Higgs, born in Tettenhall, Wolverhampton (other researchers' trees and my Grandad's research). That line contains lots of Mill Owners along the canals and may originate back to Roger Higges (e.1597) who 'received a yard of land' at Sutton Mill, Hopstone, Claverley.  However, this has never been evidenced to my knowledge.
