POMFRET somewhere in Ireland?
« on: Sunday 08 April 07 16:42 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for the marriage record of Henry POMFRET and Frances HUGGARD around 1802, in the Church of Ireland Diocese of Ossory I think, and any children of the marriage.  I think Frances would have been born in Kerry, but no idea at all where Henry was born, or if he was even Irish.  Any suggestions or advice would be great! :)
KELLY - Antrim
HUGHES - Armagh
LEYDEN - Ahamlish, Sligo/Down/Belfast
MAGUIRE/MCGUIRE - Ardglass, Co. Down
HUGGARD - Wexford/Kerry
O'REILLY - Dublin/Cavan
BARNES - Dublin
HAZELTON - NI
MCCAMBRIDGE - Antrim

Hello jaylay,

There are three items you require when searching for Irish ancestors.

1. Denomination.
2. Parish (There are 42 parishes in the Diocese)
3. Townland.

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Thanks Christopher - knew it was a long shot!  Frances was probably Church of Ireland , and if she's from the Huggard family I think she's from, she would have been from the Dingle/Tralee area, where unfortunately Church of Ireland records do not exist that far back. But Pomfret is an unusual name in Ireland so I'm hoping eventually another one will turn up somewhere!

Your Henry Pomfret has a few submitted entries in IGI but if you search for 'Pomfret' in 'Ireland'  lots of later births come up in County Cork and some also in Dublin.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hello Jaylay,

Griffith's Valuations shows a number of families with an alternative spelling. Co. Cork was the only county where this surname appeared at the time of the Valuations.

Timothy, Knockanenakirka, Dangandonovan
Thomas, Inchiquin, Clonpriest

John, Jr., Kilcredan, Kilcredan
Richard, Dromadda Beg, Village of Lady's Bridge, Ightermurragh
George, Lady's Bridge (Village of), Ightermurragh
John, Ballycrenane, Kilcredan
John, Kilcredan, Kilcredan

Thank you aghadowey and Christopher - I had seen those few entries on the IGI, but did not know about the prevalence of the name in Cork.  You've given me some leads to follow - thanks  :)

Don't know if you are still looking for Pomfret's in Ireland but I have a ships record of a Joanna Pomfret traveling to the US from Ballymacoda with two of my GG uncles. And the cemetery in that town has some Pomfrets. (Pomphret)

Hi there,

I hope you've progressed sine you originally made this post. I'm currently researching the Falvey family and Henry & Frances' daughter Margaret married John Bernard Falvey on 20th February 1844. Her father and her uncle Thomas Huggard are both dead by this date.

Do you know when Henry died?

All the best

John Falvey
