Hi, I think you should post this query to the SOUTH-AFRICA-IMMIGRANTS-BRITISH list -- Gradwell is a well-known name in South Africa and there are people on that list with an interest in it.

Amyatt Cecil Frederick Gradwell born in 1906 in willowmore eastern cape south africa to Lillian Millicent Gradwell and A. Geo. Clay Buxton. Lillians father was Henry Strickland Gradwell whose father was John Strickland Gradwell a first generation british settler.  His father William Strickland sailed to South Africa aboard the sailing vessel John in 1820 (he is my GGG grandfather).

Lillians husband (Buxton) died and she remarried George Ramsay MacLennan in Rhodesia.  She died in  1941 in Bulawayo Zimbabwe.
