Ireland help needed?

Hi
Can anyone help me? I know my Great Grandfather came from Ireland. Only thru the 1889 US census but I have no idea were he came from in Ireland or when he arrived in the US...

Were do I start ? how do I start? I am so confused...

Perhaps you can give us his name and age?
If he was born post 1864 his birth should be registered so you can search for him on the birth indexes but you need either a good idea of his year of birth, his county or townland or parish of origin or a nice unusual name!

These are available at the GRO in Dublin or on film at your local FHL.

Hi

The only thing I know is his names was Mark Caufield  birth year about 1845.  He was listed in the 1880 US census ....
