FARRAR dry goods business
« on: Wednesday 09 May 07 03:35 BST (UK) »
In 1870 Harry THOMPSON came from Canada to be apprenticed to his "Uncle Farrar" who was in "dry goods" in Leeds.  Harry`s mother was a SNOWDON?SNOWDEN of South Shields.

When and where was Harry born?  That would help us find him on the UK census, where he may be listed with his uncle.

What was his mother's full name and dob/birthplace?  Did she have a sister who married a FARRAR, or is the connection on his father's side?

I'm getting nowhere with this one, I'm afraid!   ???

I can't find a Henry/Harry Thompson on census with a wife called Emily, and I cant find their marriage in the BMD index - have you located them on the 1881 census?

I can't find a Harry/Henry Farrar with a wife called Ann either - there is a marriage on Free BMD in Mar Q 1859 with an Ann SNOWDON and a Samuel FARRAR on the same page, but that's the closest I've seen.

Sorry not to be more help...  :(

Hi

Based upon the 1861 census entry (RG9/3787 Folio 65 Page 19), when he is at home in South Shields with his parents (Alice and Joseph Logan Thompson), I think that this could be the same person. It looks like he might be working for his uncle but not actually living with him?

They emigrated to Canada in 1866 and Harry went back to England in March 1870Family notes say he was in NZ and OZ at one time Both his wives died

in UK.  As for the Farrars Google has given me several living people in the North uk in the Leeds area  but at the moment they are just names

Thank you DS for your courtesy Harry was one of my Gt uncles His great grandchildren , whom I have never met would be a few years older than myself but so far theyare just names on a page
