A universal legacy is a legacy of everything. "I leave everything I have to X" would be an example. X would be the universal legatee.

Hi
Am wondering if the meaning of Universal Legatee is that simple.

Have a 1870 probate in which the two executors are referred to as the universal legatees and executors. Neither executors are beneficiaries.

The testator had devised and bequeathed everything to these two fellows. Then he says 'upon trust to sell and dispose of the same...' (being everything). Then he says 'I direct my trustees' to divide the proceeds between my sisters...

So it seems that they were only universal legatees in order to convert everything into cash so as to allocate the legacies.
