Graingers in Wallingford
« on: Sunday 13 May 07 12:22 BST (UK) »
I have traced a line of my tree back to Stephen Grainger born 1770 in Wallingford he married Sarah Winter born 1776 in West Hagbourne, Berkshire.

Does anyone have any information about these two or their ancestors?

Thanks

Hi Chris,

I found the marriage in the Wallingford PRs - St Mary Le More church

22 Nov 1802 Stephen Granger  x  otp
                     Sarah Winter  x  otp   lic.

Wit: Thomas Ives, J Hambleton (the latter looks like a regular witness)

Unfortunately, I can find no trace of Stephen's baptism in Wallingford or Sarah's in Hagbourne.

I don't know if it's any use - and you've perhaps already found them yourself - but I found these on the IGI:

Stephen Grainger s/o John & Mary bp 24 Feb 1771 Steventon, Berks (about 10 miles from Wallingford)

Sarah Winter d/o Joseph & Sarah bp 20 March 1774
Eynsham, Oxon (about 20 miles from Wallingford)

Thanks for the information.
I have not spent long looking for any more. Its tempting to accept the two entries you found but it would be nice to have some proof.
Do you live in the Wallingford area?

I know what you mean - it would be nice to find some corroboration. Did they have their children in Wallingford?

No, I don't live anywhere near. I just have the misfortune ( ;)) to have ancestors in Oxfordshire and, because the IGI coverage is so bad, I've invested in a few parish records CDs from the local FHS.

Hi Chris

What was it that made you think Stephen was born in Wallingford in the first place?
As far as "proof " goes, unless you get really lucky with a will that names them in their current abode, or the marriage entry notes where they are from or something similar I'm afraid all the "proof " you'll find comes down to timing and geography with a little patronymics thrown into the mix
Given the childrens names below I think Jills suggested IGI births require some serious thought, patronymics providing a clue at least
John 1803, Mary Ann 1805, James 1807, William 1809,
Stephen 1811, Joseph 1814, Hannah 1822,
Burials Stephen 69 1839
all from the St Marys register A couple of later entries for what appears to be the extended family also in the St Leonards register It appears Sarah wasn't buried there
Wonder was she buried in her place of birth??  which some tended to do, or would she have remarried I can tell you if she did remarry, it wasn't in the Wallingford register St Leonard,St Mary or St Peter
cheers the other Chris

I have received some more info about this family which follows:-

"All I know is that William died in 1858 and Sophia in 1867 both at Kine Croft, Wallingford.
Sophia was born in Childrey, Berkshire around 1806.
As well as the children you have there was Eliza born 1832, died 1833 and Caroline born 1838 and died 1849."

This refers to William son of Stephen,  and William's wife Sophia. I don't have a surname for Sophia.
Can anybody add any more?

Thanks

Wallingford St Mary  burial Aug 10 1867 Sophia Grainger 62 years  Kine Croft.

I can't see William's burial in any of the 3 Wallingford churches - nor a marriage for William and Sophia.

Hi,

I live in the area and Wallingford, Wantage and Abingdon were the big market towns at this time.  Didcot was still a small village until the railway came along and only grew this big in the last 50 years or so.

Much as I would not like to walk it in a day - it is only 17 miles from Childrey to Wallingford and 8 miles from West Hagbourne to Wallingford.

Wallingford was a major crossing point of the Thames and the Kinecroft area is still their today marked by a lovely green park area.
