William Blyth in Ceres
« on: Sunday 13 May 07 16:01 BST (UK) »
I have been pouring through the OPRs for Ceres and cannot find a marriage for William Blyth (b.1684) in that parish.  I have a William Blyth marrying Isobel Briggs in Markinch in 1712.  Does anyone know if they are one and the same William?

Hi JDB307,

Is this the same William Blyth whose parents were married in  Culross Fife and he had 6 brothers and sisters?

Hello Elizabeth,

Thanks for your message.   I know that my William Blyth was married in Markinch on 4th July 1712 and I'm now fairly certain that he was born in Ceres in February 1684 (baptised on the 16th), the son of Patrick Blyth and Elspeth Swan.  I don't think that there was any connection with Culross which is rather too far to the west.

Regards, Jack

Hello Elizabeth,

Yes, I had done the same IGI search and was puzzled by the reference to Culross so I got the film of the Ceres OPR (415/1) and had a good look at that.  On page 163 there is the entry "December 18 1681 Patrick Blyth in this parish and Elspeth Swan in Cupar broght (sic) a testimonial of the contract and was proclaimed according to order".

He may have been married once before because on page 156 verso there is the entry "Patrick Blyth and Janet Imry contracted and married 20 August 1677 'yr altores' ".

Apart from the entry for the baptism of William on 4 Feb 1683, there is also an entry on page 167 "Feb 16th 1684 - Patarick (sic) Blyth Younger and Elspeth Swan had a son baptised and named William.  Witnesses Andrew Hamilton and ? Swan".  This is the William Blyth who is the subject of my enquiry.  I guess the first William did not survive infancy.

I think what may have happened is that the names Culross and Ceres got mixed up in the initial extraction process.  The OPRs are not easy to read, being in secretary hand and liberally dosed with latin.

Regards, Jack

Hello JDB307

1)  I am new here and this is in fact my first post.  I believe your William and my William are one in the same.  William Blyth (1683 - )

is my 7th great grandfather.

William Blyth (1718 - 1754)

son of William Blyth (1683)

Thomas Blyth (1754 - 1790)

William Blyth (1783 - 1857)

Thomas Blyth (1811 - 1894)

John Storer Blyth (1844 - 1919) born in Dairsie but moved to Glasgow between 1861-1866

Thomas Blyth (1869 - 1947) * see #2 below

Marion Howat Blyth (1898 - 1959)

James Suttie (1928 - 2008)

Private(Me)

  2)  Thomas Blyth(1869-1947) was married to Janet Leitch Cumming(my GG) who was Daughter of Jane Dollar/Robert Cumming who was the child of Janet Leitch and George Dollar.

Does this match your William?

I'm back to doing my FH research and only yesterday I got to William's birth, parents Patrick Blyth and Elizabeth Swan, my 7th great grandparents.  I found information on Family Search for Patrick but haven't found him in Scotland's people.  I found one birth dated 1668 to David Blayth and Jean Airther Although he had a son David (Scottish naming system), it seems unlikely that this is the right birth.
