Nicholson's help needed
« on: Monday 14 May 07 19:23 BST (UK) »
Hello Everyone,

I am looking for a death record of Anthony NICHOLSON born 1738 Crosby Ravensworth.
Farmed at Google Hill and Winderwath ASBY.

Also his wife DOROTHY NICHOLSON ( nee HODGSON) born c1740 Orton.

Their last child was born 1793 at Winderwath Asby. So their deaths must be after that. (yes, I realise she is quite old to have a child in 1793 but it is in the Asby parish Records. Could be it is transcribed wrongly or maybe her date of Bpt is wrong will check that later)

I wonder if they were living with a son or daughter in another parish then died or if they died in Asby but I can't find them
One of their daughters was living at Soulby would that be a different parish than Asby?

Help needed please

Soulby would be its own parish by this date.

Hi Judy,

Have you tried looking for any Anthony Nicholson wills at Carlisle Rec Office?

Hi Gillian,
Yes. I have a list of Nicholson Wills and I think just about every one made a will or there is  something except - you've guessed it the Anthony or Dorothy I want.

However I may be able to find their deaths in the Soulby PR's rather than Asby.

Appeal for Help. If anyone is going into the Kendal records office please could you look for the deaths of Anthony and Dorothy Nicholson in the Asby and Soulby PR's. It will be after 1793. They were born 1738 ish.

Any more suggestions gratefully received.

Dorothy Hodgson - no christening
« Reply #5 on: Saturday 02 June 07 10:34 BST (UK) »
Judy
I just had a look at my copy of the Orton parish registers and I cannot find the christening of a Dorothy Hodgson in the period Feb 1739/40 to Aug 1746.

There are the following Orton christenings between Feb 1739/40 and Mar 1742/3:
4 May 1740 Rachel da of Thomas Hodgson of Cocklake
17 Feb 1740/1 Christopher the son of Thomas Hodgson of Edge
25 Nov 1741 Thomas the son of ThomasJohn Hodgson of Tebay
9 Mar 1741/2 Isabel the daughter of Thomas Hodgson of Scarside
10 Dec 1742 Jennet the daughter of Thomas Hodgson of Tebay Gill Edge

regards
Deborah

Hi Deborah,
Thanks again for this.
I got this date for Dorothy and the name of her father from some one else so I will have to verify that when I next go up to Kendal. The person who gave me that was not too sure about who her father was.
However Dorothy Hodgson married Anthony Nicholson 16 Oct 1771 in the Parish of Asby. Dorothy Hodgson was of Scarside Orton. This was from OPR Asby.

The Orton parish register also has:

the marriage of Thomas Hodgson and Isabel Potter on 31 Aug 1740

the marriage of William Hodgson of Kirkby Lonsdale and Elizabeth _arrer of Orton on 28 Nov 1742

the marriage of William Hodgson of Scarside and Anne Noble of Borrowbridge both of Orton on 29 Mar 1744

the burial of Thomas Hodgson of Scarside, aged 21, small pox on 18 Mar 1742/3  (*)

(*) there is also the christening of Thomas the son of Thomas Hodgson of Bousfell on 11 Jan 1721/2 which I assume is a match.

Do you think there is a possibility that Dorothy is 10 years younger than you think? - that would remove any problems with the christening of that last child and she would still be old enough to marry in 1771.  My extract of the Orton parish register doesn't get as far as 1750 so I can't refute or confirm.

regards
Deborah

Hi Deborah

Just found more info.
Wilyam Hodgson b1703 Orton married Dorothy Bird in 1725 Orton.

Son William bpt 1728
M1 1742 Elizabeth Farrer
M2 1744 Ann Noble - these two you gave too.

Then apparently Dorothy born c1745.
So I think you are right that she was maybe born later than 1745 and that would tie in much better with her last child.

If only I could find the deaths it may just say how old - or am I being optimistic!

Thanks for your input.

Judy

Just as a post script are there any Hansons in Orton in the 1700 or 1600's or before if you have the records. I have some wills from there and can not quite tie them in to my other Hanson's.
