Hi Jen

>Margaret Jaffrey, married to James Martin, 1778, Belhelvie, was a 5th great grandmother<

I also have a connection to this couple through son James, born 1785 (ref: OPR's)

As well as a daughter Margaret born 1781 (ref: OPR's) I have recently found the death of another daughter.

She was Jane,  born about 1780 and died 20th June 1855 aged 75yrs at Belhelvie.  She can be found in 1841 at Peterhead and in 1851 at Belhelvie - if you'd like the details let me know.

As you probably already know James MARTIN married Christian HARVEY June 1815 and went on to have at least 4 children.  There is an MI at Belhelvie dated 6 Dec 1833, which I believe may be Christian as she was not present for the 1841 Census.

I've drawn an absolute blank with Margaret JAFFRAY - I wonder if you've been more successful?

Looking forward to hearing from you

Regards

Helen K

Hi,

This is what I have on James Martin and Margaret Jaffrey. I believe it is correct but if you find any errors, please let me know.

James Martin - born March 1750, Belhelvie ( I have 8th March as the date but not sure whether that is birth or baptism). He was the son of James Martin and Margaret Seymour ( married 4th November 1740, New Machar), who also had offspring Margaret, John, Joseph and Jean.

Margaret Jaffrey ( Or Jaffray) 8th Oct 1751, Belhelvie. Parents were William Jaffrey and Jean Laurenson, married 16th June 1747, Logie Buchan. They had other offspring - Jean, Agnes, William, Agnes, John and Robert.

Jean Laurenson ( spellings vary), 5th May, 1717, was the daughter of George Laurenson and Janet Murdo, married 26th June 1716, Logie Buchan. They also had Janet and Agnes.

That's as much as I can tell you about these people. I did have the James Martin/ Christian Harvey information and I have their offspring as Margaret, James, Mary and Christian. Does that match with what you have?

Regards,

Jen

Hi Jen

Thanks for that - you've given me some very useful information to work with.

Regarding the children of James MARTIN and Christian HARVEY, I have only found those four also.

A Belhelvie MI states Christian HARVEY died 6 Dec 1833.

James MARTIN, the father, died 17 Mar 1859 aged 73yrs.  His Son in Law Peter MATHESON was the informant.  Peter married Margaret MARTIN 4 Sep 1847 in Foveran according to the OPR's.

Daughter Christian MARTIN married James HARVEY 26 May 1850 in Belhelvie and had 9 children that I know of - the second of which was William HARVEY born 1856 Old Machar, my Great Grandfather.

James MARTIN, the son, is last recorded in 1861 boarding with his sister Christian HARVEY and family at Greenden, Belhelvie.  Christian and husband James HARVEY must have moved there from Old Machar after the death of James MARTIN the father.  James HARVEY was a Salmon Fisher, but in 1871 is recorded as a Farmer of 12acres.

James MARTIN, the son, I believe died 21 May 1867 according to a Belhelvie MI., but I don't yet have the death certificate.

Daughter Mary MARTIN was still with her father in 1851, an unmarried 29yr old House Servant.  I've not yet looked into what happened to her after this.

How are you connected to the HARVEY/MARTIN families?

Thanks again

Regards

Helen K

Hi,

James Martin and Margaret Jaffrey were my 5 x great grandparents. Their daughter, Margaret Martin, married William Raitt in 1807, Belhelvie and it is really the Raitt line which is my direct one. My great grandfather was Peter Grant Raitt, born 1871, Aberdeen.

So my link with the Harvey branch is very distant ( apart from the fact that I live with one now, but that's a different story!)

But I do like to fill in the gaps so thank you for your information, I shall add it to my tree.

Cheers,

Jen

hi genjen,

do you have any more details for your Raitt line?  I only have Jane Raitt born 1791 in Aberdeenshire.  I have no other details for her except she was married to Robert Russell and they lived in John Street, Aberdeen in the 1841 census.

Do you have a Jane that would fit this description?

Thanks,
Lindsay

Hi,

I'm sorry, I don't have a Jane who would fit this description. The only Raitt I have born around this time is William who was born 1783ish in Belhelvie. I suppose it is possible that he and Jane were siblings but at the moment I have no way of proving that.

You say you have Jane in 1841; I presume that means that she died before 1851 and therefore before registration began.

Do you know where and when she married Robert Russell?

I would be very interested in knowing more about her, especially if it turns out that there is a link to my William.

Sorry I can't be of any more help.

Jen

« Reply #25 on: Saturday 11 June 11 13:58 BST (UK) »

I also have links to the Hay family from Cruden, in the 1881 census for Cruden
I have a large family of Hay's living in Whinnyfold, Cruden. Also in the 1891 census for Cruden I have my G. Grandfather James Hay and his wife Mary Ann Hay (summers) living at 121 Pleasant Cottage.

My great-grandmother was Catherine Hay (1867-1900), of Whinnyfold, Cruden Bay, daughter of Andrew Hay and Jane Finnie/Findlay.  She married Archibald MacDougall in Peterhead, 1891.

One of ten, she had a brother, James, born 1862. He disappears from the Whinnyfold household in the 1891 census, though a James Hay re-appears in that same census year at Pleasant Cottage.

It would be interesting to know if your great-grandfather is the brother of Catherine, and thus my great-great uncle.

Kind regards,

Alex

Hello Alex,
Yes you are correct, the James Hay I mentioned and your Catherine Hay are brother and sister, James Hay married a Mary Ann Summers in 1883 in St. James' Church, Cruden, she was a servant in one of the Hay's houses in the 1881 census, and then later on they were living in Pleasant Cottages where my Grandmother was born, sorry for the delay in getting back to you, if I can help with any other information about the Whinnyfold clan let me know and I will answer more promptly.

Yours
Don
