Can anyone help with the kind of work a "Corporation boatman" would have undertaken around 1851 on the Tyne? Where would the records relating to corporation boatmen of this period now be held if there are any? Many Thanks, Pete.

All I know is that this song was about them [not Scottish, by the way]

But, probably they were involved in barge transport of coal.

The Keel or Keel boat was used for transporting coal down the River Tyne from shallower water, to load up Colliers (coal ships) waiting in deeper water.
