Dublin Help please
« on: Monday 21 May 07 16:39 BST (UK) »
On the 1881 census my Gr.Grandfather James McMahon born during 1864 in Dublin   was a labourer in a Copper Factory, also his brother Michael born 1866 was a Ropery Labourer.

Would anyone know if they would of been born in Dublin City or Dublin?

I have tried to obtain a copy of their Birth Certificates from the Registrar General in Roscommon but they could not trace any birth details, so I really don`t know where to go from here.

Any ideas please?

Dublin can refer to either city or county.
There are several possibilites on IGI. Do you know the parents names?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Is the 1881 census the English one? Are the two brothers' ages reported consistently in other censuses? If he was reported as 17 in April 1881, he may have been born in 1863 before general registration so I would focus on the younger brother as you are more likely to find his birth in the IGI database and subsequently in the GRO.

Hi malshie

I just joined rootsChat . I am the gg grandson son  of william  and Margaret from Dublin. My grand father is Michael McMahon , brother of James. Saw some of your posts so was interested to know how far you have got with the James research. I would like to contact  Ronnie G who said  she is related to Michael. I went to Cummins Court area last year. Hope to hear from you. Paul

Hello Paul good to hear from you. I am the gr gr granddaughter of William and Margaret. I have little information on them when they lived in Cummins Court, which  I believe no longer exists? I have information on the family when they left Dublin and settled in the North East of England. I have Census records, birth certificates (including a copy of your gr grandfather's Michael). If you would like me to send you a copy you can send me a personal message. I have recently found out where William and his wife Margaret are buried and my gr grandfather James and his wife. Not sure how much information you have so I shall finish now. Look forward to hearing from you and I am happy to share any information if it helps.

Hi Malshie

Great to hear you. Looking at the various posts about my part of the family only got me going yesterday so I am still learning the ropes. At this stage I am not sure how to send you a personal message (but will work it out)

I visited the graves of william and margaret last year when I came over from Oz. Also saw Michaels . His wife Mary ( my grandmother)came to Oz in 1926 after his passing.
Life must have been tough in Ireland . Just walking around James st in Dublin it was clear that even now it is  reasonably 'poor' area today

I would be interested to know what history you have out about James. It might be an antiquated way to research but I am currently writing to all the McMahons in the phone book from newcastle/ Northumberland to see what I can find. This helped when I did the same thing for Michaels wife Mary. I have done a fair bit of research on her side of the family .
The birth certificate sounds great once I work out how to send a personal message

I have information that may be of interest to you. Thanks
Paul M
Ps: I tried to find RonnieG but was told no posts had been made since 2012. Ronnie said Michael was related but could not work out how
