Hi mtyler

Can't easily see a marriage for a couple with those names anywhere in Scotland. There are marriages between a John Gillies and an Elizabeth but not with a surname of Young. The closest I could see in Roxburgh was between a John and an Elizabeth TURNBULL on 26 MAY 1862 Cavers, Roxburgh, Scotland.

Regards.

Today I found a birth record for son of this couple named Adam Young Gillies fom 1869 in Cavers and it states on form that John Gillies and Elizabeth Young were married in 1856 in Melbourne Australia

Ah, well that explains that  ::)

I'll have a look on the censuses and see what we can find. What was John Gillies occupation on the 1869 birt cert?

Regards.

Yes it does appear to be correct family. I wonder why they went form Scotland to Australia back to Scotland and then to US

One of life's mysteries  :) They also looked to have probably met (?) and certainly married in Australia.

I found this entry on another genealogy forum:

young,s of nisbet
my family lived in nisbet for over 250 years from 1755 onwards.for all of this time they were blacksmiths.my branch left in 1852.looking for other surviving branches of this family.

That would explain how Elizabeth Young ended up in Australia probably. Have you got this info or would you like me to post details of the 1841/51 Censuses for her and family?

Regards.
