burial on medway
« on: Sunday 27 May 07 18:25 BST (UK) »
hi i am trying to find the burial place of my ggg grandad George PLeasance. he was born in 1814 in gillingham and died 1908 (good age!) Medway. He was a ropemaker and could have died at James St in Gillingham - its quite likely.

i wonder if anyone could seuggest whereabouts he is buried?

Thanks
Alison

Hi Alison,

I think perhaps you should amend your dates, you have him born six years after he died.

I think the most likely burial ground would be Gillingham Green Cemetery, Grange Road.

I have to beg to differ with buddysmum.

As well having numerous family members buried in Woodlands Road Cemetery, my great grandfather and greatgrand mother were buried in Gilligham Green  Cemetery in 1924 and 1929 respectively, as were other family members in the early nineteen hundreds. They were most definitely not in a vaults.

(Grange Road Cemetery was established as Gillingham's first municipal cemetery in the mid ninteteenth century and was formally closed to new burials in 1973. Woodlands Road Cemetery was established in the early 20th. century and from 1973 became the only operating municipal cemetery in Gillingham. Both cemeteries also served the Rainham area from 1929 when that parish was transferred from the jurisdiction of Milton next Sittingbourne Rural District Council to Gillingham Borough)
